Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Ice Core" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a paleoclimate figure from a polar research journal. Cool, quiet and exact: a dense raw record under a calm smoothed curve, pale climate-stage bands, and a drawn core segment strip that ties time to depth.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F1F6FA (pale icy blue) for the whole canvas.
- Raw or primary series: #1F3E6B (deep blue).
- Smoothed or secondary series: #6FA8D8 (lighter ice blue), also used for the eyebrow text.
- Warm period bands: #F7E9D6, with their stage ribbon in #D9A76A and stage name in #A0703A.
- Cold period bands: #DCE7F1, with their stage ribbon in #7F9FC2 and stage name in #4E6E92. Neutral stage ribbons: #C6D3E0.
- Title and axis ink: #1A2B40. Secondary text: #5F7187. Gridlines and footer rule: #D3DEE8. Stage dividers: #B9C9D8.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Noticia Text throughout. Eyebrow 11px 700 uppercase, 2.2px letter-spacing, #6FA8D8. Title 28px 700 #1A2B40 stating the finding. Subtitle 15px italic #5F7187 with measure, unit and period. Stage names 10px 700 uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing. Tick labels 12px regular. Annotations and axis titles 12px italic. Legend 12px. Source 11.5px.
- Write units as words ("per mil") if the font lacks a symbol; never let a glyph fall back to another font.

Layout:
- 76px left margin to the plot, plot right edge at 900px. Eyebrow at y 44, title at y 80, subtitle at y 106, with a compact line legend right-aligned on the subtitle row.
- A stage ribbon row above the plot: a 4px colored bar per period spanning its time range (0.75px gap between bars) with the stage name centered 8px above it (the first stage left-aligned).
- Plot about 264px tall. The time axis below it, then a 20px tall core strip 36px below the axis, then depth labels, then a 1px footer rule and the source line.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 0.8px #D3DEE8, with y labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot and a small italic unit label above the top tick.
- Time axis: 1px #1A2B40 baseline with 5px ticks and 12px labels every 10 units; italic axis title right-aligned under it. For geological time, run oldest on the left to present on the right.
- Stage boundaries: 0.8px #B9C9D8 dashed (2 on, 3 off) verticals through the plot.

Marks:
- Line chart: the raw series as a 0.9px #1F3E6B polyline with no smoothing and no markers, so its fine texture shows. Over it a smoothed version (moving average) as a 2.6px #6FA8D8 monotone curve with round caps, sitting on a 5.5px #F1F6FA halo at 85% opacity so it lifts off the raw line. Mark the key extreme with a 4px radius circle (page fill, 1.6px deep blue stroke), a 0.8px leader line down, and a 12px italic deep blue label.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered bars in #1F3E6B at about 55% of the band, with a 2.6px #6FA8D8 tick or line for the smoothed or reference value per bar; period bands and the stage ribbon stay behind the bars exactly as above.
- Core strip (for a time or depth axis): a row of rounded (3px) rectangles, one per 500 m segment, alternating #FFFFFF and #E4EDF5 with a 0.8px #A9BDD1 outline and 1.5px gaps, filled with faint vertical striations in #1F3E6B at 10 to 30% opacity that get denser toward the deep end. Depth labels (11px #5F7187) under the segment boundaries with 5px ticks, and a bold 11px "Core" label to the left.

Avoid: saturated colors, gradients, drop shadows, heavy frames, markers on the raw line, and any second y axis.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the smoothed curve reads clearly above the raw texture, stage names do not collide with each other, core depth labels line up with their segment boundaries, and every glyph renders in Noticia Text.
