Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Hypsometric" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a relief map's elevation tints turned into a chart. On deep charcoal, every bar is built from fixed value bands colored like a hypsometric map legend, climbing from lowland green through khaki and umber to snow, with thin contour lines running across the whole chart at each band edge. Quiet, cartographic and quietly beautiful.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #1C1F22 (charcoal) for the whole canvas.
- Ten tint bands, one per equal value step from zero to the axis maximum (for the reference chart, 500 m each from 0 to 5,000 m): #3E6A40, #4F7A4A (lowland green), #6F8C55, #969A5E, #B9A86A (khaki), #A68352, #8A5A3A (umber), #9E7F6C, #C8C0B8, #EEF0EE (snow). Band k always has the same color wherever it appears.
- Contour lines: #6A7176. Main text: #E4E7E5. Secondary text and baseline: #9AA1A5. Category labels: #C9CDD0. Summit triangles: #0B0C0D.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Alegreya italic 500, 32px, #E4E7E5 for the title, stating the finding in sentence case.
- Josefin Sans for everything else: subtitle 300 13px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing in #9AA1A5 (measure, unit, order and the band size); category labels 300 12px uppercase with 1.3px letter-spacing, centered 24px under the baseline (the highlighted one 600 in #EEF0EE); value labels 400 13px #E4E7E5 (the highlight 600 15px #EEF0EE); legend numbers 12px #9AA1A5; direction cue 300 11px with 2px letter-spacing; source 300 12px.

Layout:
- Title at y 62 and subtitle at y 92, left at x 56. Plot from x 128 to 920 with the value range from y 150 (top) to 506 (baseline).
- A tint legend strip down the left edge at x 56, 14px wide, stacking all ten bands at the same scale as the chart with a 0.6px #9AA1A5 outline, 5px ticks and numbers to its right at every second band edge (0, 1,000, ... 5,000). It doubles as the y axis.
- Under the category labels, a direction cue: "WEST" at the left, "EAST" at the right, joined by a 0.8px #6A7176 line ending in a small arrowhead (use the ordering your data actually has). Source at the bottom left, y 580.

Axes and grid:
- No separate y-axis labels; the legend strip carries them. Contour lines at every band edge run the full plot width over the bars: 0.6px at 60% opacity, with every second one (the labeled edges) 0.9px at 90%. A 1px #9AA1A5 baseline.

Marks:
- Bar chart: vertical bars 66% of the band wide, square corners, each filled by stacking whole tint bands from zero and clipping the stack to the bar's value, so the top band is cut partway exactly at the value. Keep categories in their natural order (here west to east), not sorted by value. A tiny summit triangle (12px wide, 10px tall, #0B0C0D fill, 0.9px #C8C0B8 outline, #EEF0EE for the highlight) sits centered on each bar top, with the value 17px above it.
- Line chart: draw the series as a terrain silhouette: fill the area under the line with the same stacked tint bands clipped to the area, a 2px #EEF0EE line on top at 85% opacity, the same contour lines crossing it, small summit triangles at the local maxima with their values, and additional series as 1.5px #C9CDD0 lines dashed 5 4 with italic end labels.

Avoid: gradients (the tints are hard-edged bands), drop shadows, rounded corners, a boxed legend, bright saturated greens or blues, gridlines that stop at the bars, and sorting that breaks the natural order.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each band's color matches its value range on every bar and on the legend strip, the top band of each bar is cut exactly at its value, contour lines cross the full width, every summit has a triangle and a value, and the title claim is true for the data.
