Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Night Count" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a sober county report on a serious subject. Dark, calm and exact: every count is shown, nothing is dramatized, and caveats are stated plainly.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #151C28 (deep blue-gray).
- Series: #93C5FD (pale blue) and #FBBF24 (warm amber).
- Title text and the header rule: #F3F5F8. Secondary text: #8C97AB. Ordinary value labels: #C9D1DE. Gridlines: #263042; zero line #4A5568; method-change marker #56627A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Source Sans 3 throughout. Eyebrow 600 12px uppercase with 2.2px letter-spacing in #8C97AB. Title 700 32px #F3F5F8, stating the finding plainly. Subtitle 15px #8C97AB.
- Value labels 500 12.5px #C9D1DE; the latest value 700 15px in its series color. Series names 700 14px in series color. Axis labels 12.5px. Footnote 12.5px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow y 58, title y 98, subtitle y 126, then a thin 0.75px #F3F5F8 rule full width at y 150.
- Plot from y 196 to 494 and x 104 to 856, leaving room on the right for direct series labels.
- A 1px #263042 rule at y 534, then a two-line asterisk footnote explaining the method change, with "Source: illustrative data" right-aligned in #6B768A.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #263042 gridlines at 4 even steps; no vertical grid, no axis lines. Every year labeled below; the method-change year in 700 #F3F5F8.
- A 1px #56627A dotted (2 on, 4 off) vertical line at the method-change year with "* New count method" in 600 12px beside its top.

Marks:
- Line chart: straight 2.5px lines, a solid r 4.5 dot at every observation with a 2px background-colored ring. Label every point: the upper series above its dots (12px gap), the lower series below (22px). Add an asterisk to affected values. Direct series labels to the right of the last points; no legend.
- Bar chart: grouped bars per year (pale blue and amber, 2px gap, square corners) with the value above each bar in the same label style, and the method-change year marked by the same dotted line and asterisk.

Avoid: glow, gradients, emotional imagery, smoothing between annual counts (these are one-night snapshots), and hiding the methodology caveat.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every year has a visible dot and label, no labels collide between the series, the asterisk appears only on the values the method change affects, and the title's claim is arithmetically true.
