Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Histogram Bench" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a quality-control measurement report from a metrology lab. Clean white page, cool steel-blue bins, one dark red reference curve, and the statistics printed plainly beside the chart. Trustworthy and technical.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #FFFFFF.
- Bins: #9AB0C6 fill with a 1px #5B7590 edge.
- Reference curve (fitted distribution or target): #A61E2D.
- Ink for title, axis titles, baseline and the mean rule: #1E2833. Secondary text and SD rules: #5F6B77.
- Gridlines: #E3E7EB. Stats box fill #F6F8FA with a 1px #E3E7EB border and a 3px #5B7590 top bar.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Source Sans 3 throughout. Title 700, 27px, #1E2833 at x 48, baseline 50, stating the finding. Subtitle 400, 16px, #5F6B77, baseline 78, with the measure, unit and bin width.
- Axis tick labels 400, 14px, #5F6B77. Axis titles 600, 14px, #1E2833. Rule labels 700, 14px with the value under them in 400, 13px. Stats box caption 700, 12px uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing; stats keys 400, 15px (italic for n); values 600, 15px, tabular figures, right aligned. Source 12px.

Layout:
- A 1.2px #1E2833 rule under the subtitle at y 100 from x 48 to 912.
- Plot area x 96 to 700, y 170 to 506. The y-axis title "Count" sits above the tick labels at the top left instead of rotated.
- A 176px stats box to the right at x 736, y 170 (n, mean, SD, share within one SD), and a key below it (bin swatch 22 x 14px, curve and rule samples 22px long).

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines 1px #E3E7EB at round counts. No vertical gridlines, no y axis line.
- A 1.4px #1E2833 baseline with 6px ticks at round measurement values and labels 24px below.

Marks:
- Bar chart: a true histogram. Bins touch with no gaps, each a rectangle with square corners filled #9AB0C6 and edged 1px #5B7590. Overlay the fitted normal curve scaled to counts (n x bin width x density) as a 2.4px #A61E2D line on a 5px white underlay so it separates from the bins.
- Line chart: plot the series as a 2.4px #A61E2D line on a 5px white underlay with the area under it filled #9AB0C6 at 60% and edged 1px #5B7590; use the dashed rules for the mean and plus or minus one SD of the values.
- Reference rules: the mean as a 1.6px #1E2833 line dashed 6 4, the SD rules 1.2px #5F6B77 dashed 3 4, running from above the plot (y 150) to the baseline, each labeled above the plot ("Mean", "-1 SD", "+1 SD" with a true minus sign) and its value underneath.

Avoid: gaps between bins, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, more than one warm color, and statistics that are not computed from the data.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the curve's area matches the histogram, the mean and SD values in the rules match the stats box, and the rule labels do not collide when SD is small.
