Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Hide Grades" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a leather workshop's order book. Warm, crafted and sturdy: bars read like cut leather straps with hand stitching, and the numbers are pressed into the surface.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #E7D7BE (tan hide), with a very faint fractal noise grain (turbulence base frequency 0.9, 2 octaves, tinted brown at 9% alpha) and a scatter of tiny pores in #7A5B40 at 8% opacity.
- Bars: #8B4A22 (saddle). The highlighted category: #5C2E14 (deep saddle).
- Stitching: #F2E2C4 thread, with a 25% black shadow copy offset 0.8px down-right.
- Baseline burnished edge: #5C2E14 with a 1px #C79A6A burnish highlight.
- Text: #3B2314 ink; secondary #7A5B40.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Vollkorn 700, 32px, #3B2314 for the title, sentence case, stating the finding. Vollkorn italic 400 17px in #5C2E14 for the share annotation.
- Barlow for everything else: subtitle 16px 400 #7A5B40 (measure, unit, place, year and total); y labels 14px; value labels 700 18px; category labels 16px 500 (the highlighted one 700); source and footer notes 13px.

Layout:
- 64px side margins. Title baseline at 68, subtitle at 98. Plot from x 104 to 896, baseline at y 470, top of scale at y 150.
- A dashed footer rule (0.8px, dash 5 4, #7A5B40 at 60%) at y 540, with the source left and a short method note right at y 568.

Axes and grid:
- Three faint gridlines at round values (0.8px #7A5B40 at 28% opacity), labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot, plus a "0" at the baseline. No axis lines.
- The baseline is a burnished leather edge: a 4px #5C2E14 rounded strip (radius 2) extending 6px past the bars on both sides, with a 1px #C79A6A line along its top.

Marks:
- Bar chart: wide bars (about 64% of the band, 84px for six categories), corner radius 3, starting at zero. Shade each bar with a horizontal gradient from 14% black at the left edge to clear at 18%, clear to 82%, and 18% black at the right edge, plus a 2px white 14% highlight along the top. Inside each bar draw a saddle stitch: a 1.8px #F2E2C4 dashed line (dash 6 4, round caps) inset 7px from the left, top and right edges and open at the baseline.
- Line chart: a 4px #8B4A22 line with round joins, drawn as a leather strap, with a 1.8px #F2E2C4 dashed stitch line (dash 6 4) running along its center; points as 7px deep saddle discs with a stitch-colored 1px ring.
- Debossed value labels: the numeral in Barlow 700 18px in #6B4128 (deep saddle for the highlight) sits 12px above the bar, with an identical copy in #F7EDDB 1px lower behind it as the lit lower edge of the pressing.

Avoid: bright colors, glossy bevels, drop shadows under bars, gridlines drawn over bars, and stitch lines that touch the bar edge.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the stitching stays evenly inset on every bar (including the shortest), values read as pressed rather than blurred, and any share quoted in the title or annotation is arithmetically right.
