Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Herbarium" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a pressed-plant sheet from a natural history herbarium. Quiet, archival and precise: sepia ink on aged cream paper, a typed specimen label, a strip of paper tape and one round accession stamp. Scholarly, never kitsch.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Sheet: #F3ECD9 (aged cream) for the whole canvas, with a very faint warm paper mottle (fractal noise, base frequency 0.035, 3 octaves, tinted brown at 7% opacity).
- Ink: #4A3526 (sepia) for the title, data line, markers, axis numerals and the label border.
- Trend and secondary series: #7D8A55 (faded olive).
- Stamp: #8A2E2A (oxblood), used only for the accession stamp.
- Pencil gray: #CFC5AE for gridlines, the sheet's inset border and the ruled lines on the label.
- Muted text: #7A6A58. Label card fill: #FBF6E8. Paper tape: #E4D7B4 at 82% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Crimson Pro 600, 31px, sepia for the title, which states the finding in sentence case.
- Crimson Pro italic 18px #7A6A58 for the subtitle (measure, unit, place, years); italic 14 to 15px for axis captions, month cues and the trend label.
- Crimson Pro 400, 16px for axis numerals (y numerals #7A6A58, x numerals sepia).
- Courier Prime for the typed specimen label (12px 700 header with 1px letter-spacing, 11.5px fields; field names #7A6A58, values sepia; a Latin name in italic) and the 12px source line.

Layout:
- A 1px #CFC5AE rule inset 22px from all four edges, like the edge of a mounted sheet.
- Title at x 56, baseline 76; subtitle at baseline 106; a 0.8px sepia rule at 50% opacity across the full width at y 126.
- Plot area roughly x 96 to 588, y 176 to 486. The right column (x 664 to 912) holds the stamp above and the specimen label below.
- Specimen label: a 248 x 178 card at x 664, y 350, fill #FBF6E8, 1px sepia border plus a 0.5px inner border 4px inside, with a soft 1.2px blur drop shadow at 18% sepia. A centered uppercase header ("FLORA OF <PLACE>"), then 6 typed fields ("Taxon:", "Common:", "Record:", "Years:", "Trend:", "Det.:") 21px apart, each on a 0.8px #CFC5AE ruled line, values starting 68px from the card's left edge. Put the chart's key facts in the fields.
- Paper tape: an 80 x 22 strip with zigzag torn ends, rotated -38 degrees, laid across the label's top-left corner.
- Accession stamp: centered near (786, 246), rotated -14 degrees, 88% opacity. Outer ring r 52 at 2.6px, inner ring r 45 at 1px, center ring r 23 at 1px, all oxblood. Courier Prime 700 10.5px, 2.2px letter-spacing, place name set on the upper arc; "HERBARIUM" 9px 700 below center; "No." 11px and a 15px catalog number in Crimson Pro 600 in the middle. Roughen it with an ink-wear mask (fractal noise base frequency 0.9 used as an alpha mask) so it reads as a real rubber stamp.
- Source line "Source: ..." in Courier Prime 12px #7A6A58 at x 56, baseline 560.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only: 0.7px #CFC5AE, dashed 2 on 3 off, extending 8px past the plot on both sides; the baseline solid at 1.1px.
- No axis lines on the sides. Y numerals right-aligned 16px left of the plot; a small italic caption ("Day of year") above them.
- X ticks: 6px sepia 0.8px ticks under the baseline, numerals centered 26px below it.
- Optional secondary cues on the right edge (e.g. calendar dates for day-of-year values): a 6px tick plus italic 14px text.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 1.5px sepia line with straight segments and round joins; every observation is an open circle, r 3.4, 1.4px sepia stroke, filled with the sheet color. A loess (tricube-weighted local linear, span about 0.55) trend drawn BEHIND the data as a 9px olive band at 35% opacity with a 1.4px olive centerline at 90% opacity. A second series would use olive open circles with a dashed 1.5px line, labeled directly.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered bars (about 45% of the band) outlined in 1.2px sepia and filled with the sheet color, like pressed specimens outlined in ink; a highlighted bar or second series filled #7D8A55 at 55% opacity with a sepia outline. Values in Crimson Pro 15px sepia just above each bar.

Labels and annotation:
- Label the trend directly in italic olive Crimson Pro 15px (e.g. "loess trend, day 174 in 1985 to day 162 in 2024"). No legend box.

Avoid: bright colors, gradients on data marks, heavy borders, drop shadows anywhere except the specimen label, more than one stamp, sans-serif fonts, and a stamp or tape that covers data.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the stamp's ring text is fully visible and roughened but legible, the tape sits on the label corner without covering typed text, the label's longest value fits inside the card, and the trend numbers in the title and label match the data.
