Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Handheld LCD" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the reflective monochrome screen of an early-2000s handheld organizer. One ink, hard pixel edges, a status bar and a stylus tab bar, set in a charcoal plastic bezel.

Colors (use these exact values):
- LCD glass: #C7D0B8. All screen ink: #2A2F22 (never any other color on the screen, except the glass color for text on an inverted tab).
- Pixel gaps: a 4px grid of 1px #B3BDA3 lines at 55% over the whole screen.
- Screen shading: a top-down gradient from black at 10% to 0 over the top 12%, and white at 10% over the bottom 15%.
- Device body: vertical gradient #4A4E53 to #34373B to #26282B with a 1px #6B7076 highlight at 60%, radius 46px. Screen surround: #1B1D1F, 16px radius. Page behind: #E3E1DA.
- Bezel printing: #B9BDC2 (brand), #8A8F95 and #AEB3B8 (soft-key labels).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Silkscreen for headings and labels: app name 16px bold, title 20px bold in caps stating the finding, legend and unit labels 12px, tab labels 14px bold.
- VT323 for all figures: clock 24px, subtitle 20px, axis values and category labels 20px, bar value labels 22px.

Layout:
- Treat the screen as a 188 x 99 grid of 4px pixels; snap every mark, rule and icon to it.
- Status bar (top 10 rows): app name and view name at left, clock and a pixel battery glyph (3 of 4 cells) at right, then a dotted 1-pixel divider.
- Title and subtitle under the status bar, a pixel legend (solid square and dithered square) right-aligned on the subtitle line.
- Bottom 10 rows: a stylus tab bar with 4 equal tabs, the active one inverted (solid ink, glass-colored text).
- Below the screen on the bezel: the brand name, three pill soft keys with labels printed above them, a round d-pad, and the source line in 10px Silkscreen.

Axes and grid:
- No axis line except a 1-pixel solid baseline. Gridlines are single pixels every third column at 35% ink. Y labels in VT323, right-aligned just left of the plot.

Marks:
- Bar chart: bars 12 pixels wide on a 16 pixel pitch, heights rounded to whole pixels. The primary value is solid ink; a secondary value stacked on top uses a 50% checkerboard dither (alternating 4px ink cells) with a 1-pixel solid top edge and 1-pixel solid sides. Value labels above each bar; a small pixel arrow over the key bar.
- Line chart: a 1-pixel-thick (4px) staircase polyline built from pixel runs, with 3 x 3 pixel square markers; a second series drawn as a dithered line (every other pixel).
- Ghosting: every data mark repeated 1 pixel right and 1 pixel down in ink at 14% opacity, drawn underneath.

Avoid: anti-aliased curves, gradients or color on the screen, glows, thin hairlines, rounded bars, and em dashes.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every mark edge lands on the 4px grid, the dither reads as a mid-gray at thumbnail size, and nothing on the screen uses a color other than the ink and the glass.
