Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Hairline Ink" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a monochrome print plate. Black ink on white paper only, drawn with a technical pen: almost everything is a hairline, and exactly one thing is heavy. Quiet, exact and editorial.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Ink: #000000 for every data mark, axis, rule, title and label.
- Secondary text only (subtitle, notes, source): #6B6B6B.
- No other colors, no grey fills, no tints, no opacity tricks.

Typography (Google Fonts): Inter Tight, weights 300, 400 and 500 only.
- Title: 300 (light), 36px, -0.8px letter-spacing, black, sentence case, stating the finding, broken over three or four short lines at 40px line pitch.
- Eyebrow above the title: 500, 11px, uppercase, 3px letter-spacing, with a 40px 0.75px black rule 14px below it.
- Subtitle: 400, 14px, #6B6B6B, stating measure, unit and years, on three lines at 21px pitch.
- Callout numeral: 500, 34px (for example "+10.6"), with a 13px #6B6B6B explanation under it.
- Category labels are small caps: uppercase 10px, 400, 1.6px letter-spacing (the focus category 11px 500). Values 11.5px 400 with tabular figures (focus 12.5px 500).
- Axis headings (years): 500, 13px, 3px letter-spacing. Source: 9.5px 500 uppercase, 2px letter-spacing, #6B6B6B.

Layout:
- A large left-margin title block from x = 56 to about 300: eyebrow, rule, title, subtitle, a 200px 0.75px black rule, then the callout numeral and note. The source sits at the bottom of this column.
- The chart occupies the right side, roughly x = 360 to 904, from y = 96 to 540.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines and no numeric axis. Each value is printed next to its point.
- Line chart (slope): two vertical 0.75px black axes, one per period (about 220px apart), headed by the year in tracked caps.
- Bar chart: a single 0.75px black baseline, no other axes.

Marks:
- Line chart: every non-focus series is a 0.75px black straight line; the single focus series is a 2.5px black line with round caps drawn on top. Endpoints are tiny open circles: r 3 with a 0.75px black stroke and white fill (r 4 with a 1.5px stroke for the focus). For a slope chart, labels sit in tidy columns on both sides: left side "NAME" column right-aligned 58px left of the axis and the value column right-aligned 18px left of the axis; right side value column 18px right of the axis and names 58px right of it. When labels would collide, nudge them apart to a 17px minimum pitch and draw a 0.5px black leader from the point to the shifted label.
- Bar chart: bars drawn as 0.75px black outlines with white fill, and only the focus bar solid black; values in 11.5px ink above each bar, category names in tracked small caps below.

Avoid: any color, grey fills, gradients, shadows, legends, gridlines, rounded or thick strokes other than the one focus mark, and bold type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that exactly one mark is heavy, every other line is a true hairline, labels form straight columns with no overlaps, and the title block has generous air around it.
