Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Green Bar" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page torn off a continuous-feed line printer in a data center operations room. Pale green and white bands, tractor-feed holes, all-caps monospaced output struck through a fabric ribbon, and the data printed as characters rather than drawn.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #FCFCF7 for the whole canvas.
- Green bands: #D8EBD3, 36px tall, alternating with 36px of plain paper, across the printable area only (x 40 to 920). Start with a green band at the very top.
- Ribbon ink for all text, rules and marks: #2A2D34.
- Red ribbon: #B8322A, only for values that break a threshold, the threshold line, its label and its key entry.
- Tractor holes: #7E847C circles showing the desk through the paper. Perforations: #B9BEB3.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IBM Plex Mono everywhere, ALL CAPS, preserving repeated spaces (xml:space preserve or white-space: pre).
- Title 24px 700 stating the finding. Job header line 15px 600. Job details and rule line 13px 400. Subtitle 14px 400 with measure, unit and period. Axis labels 14px 400. Key and footer 13px (key labels 600). Value callouts 14px 700.

Layout:
- Tractor strips 40px wide on both sides: 7px-radius holes centered 20px from each edge every 36px, and a 1.2px dashed perforation (5 on, 3 off) down x = 40 and x = 920. A matching horizontal perforation near the bottom edge (y 582) marks the page fold.
- Text starts at x 64 and ends at x 896. Print lines sit on an 18px pitch, two per band.
- Top line: organization and department on the left, "RUN 0417 PAGE 3" style job counters right-aligned. Second line: job stream, report id and print time. Third line: a full-width row of "=" characters.
- Title at y 104, subtitle at y 132, with the key right-aligned on the subtitle line.
- Footer at y 560: "*** END OF REPORT ... *** SOURCE: ..." on the left, a summary counter (for example the maximum and a line count) on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Y labels right-aligned at x 114 in H:MM or plain numbers; the threshold value's label in red 600.
- Gridlines: printed dot rows, 1.2px ribbon ink at 55% opacity, dasharray 1.2 5.4.
- Baseline: a solid 1.6px ribbon ink rule with 6px tick marks at labeled x positions; x labels 26px below it.
- A non-zero y baseline is fine for a line chart when every value sits in a narrow band; label the bottom value.

Marks:
- Line chart: connect the points with a faint ribbon line (1.4px, ribbon ink at 40% opacity) and print a bold "+" (23px 700) centered on every point. Points past the threshold print in red with their value 16px above. Threshold: a 1.6px red dashed line (6 on, 4 off). Label the last point with its value.
- Bar chart: build each bar from stacked printed characters, a column of "#" or "X" glyphs on the 18px line pitch (or a solid rect under the dot mask), 20 to 28px wide, square ends, ribbon ink; bars past a threshold in red, value printed above each bar.

Texture:
- Every printed element (text, rules, marks) is masked by a dot-matrix pattern: white circles of radius 1.02 on a 2.2px grid inside a userSpaceOnUse mask, so glyphs and lines break into fine dots. Paper, bands, holes and perforations are not masked.

Avoid: proportional fonts, lowercase, color beyond green bands and the red ribbon, smooth curves, fills under the line, drop shadows, rounded boxes, and thick gridlines.

When you're done, render the chart and check that repeated spaces survived, the dot texture shows on text at full size but the title still reads at thumbnail size, bands line up with the print lines, no "+" collides with a label, and the count in the title matches the red points.
