Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Gradiometer Traverse

DarkLine

A geophysics plate with a white survey trace over a grayscale raster and keyed anomalies.

  • Trace white#F2F2F0
  • Marker amber#E0B25A
  • Grid gray#2C2E30
  • Zero line#6A6D70

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Gradiometer Traverse" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a geophysical survey plate from an archaeology report, read on a dark screen. Instrument-like and restrained: a single white trace, a grayscale raster strip underneath, and a few amber numbered markers keyed to a short interpretation list.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #111213 (near black).
- Data trace: #F2F2F0.
- Markers, their leader lines and the raster's highlighted row: #E0B25A (amber). Amber is only for annotation, never data.
- Gridlines: #2C2E30. The zero (or reference) line is brighter: #6A6D70 at 1.1px. Secondary text: #8A8D90.
- Raster strip cells in pure grayscale from rgb(235,235,235) (most negative) to rgb(20,20,20) (most positive), clipped to a stated range.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Overpass 700 for the title only (29px, #F2F2F0, stating the finding).
- Overpass Mono for everything else: eyebrow 11.5px uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing in #8A8D90 ("SURVEY G3 / TRAVERSE T5 / ..."); subtitle 14px #8A8D90 with measure and unit; tick labels 12px (the zero label in #F2F2F0, others gray; positive values signed "+10"); marker numbers 11.5px 600 amber; list headings 13px 600 white; list notes 11.5px gray; source 11px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow, title and subtitle at the top.
- Main plot from x 80 to 660, y 168 to 392. A 1px #2C2E30 vertical divider at x 684 separates an interpretation column on the right: an "INTERPRETATION" header (12px 600, 1.5px letter-spacing) and numbered entries 62px apart, each a hollow amber circle (r 9) with the number, a white heading and a gray line with position and magnitude.
- Directly below the plot, sharing its x scale, a raster strip about 80px tall (10 rows of cells, 0.5 unit wide), with the plotted row outlined by a 1px amber box and flagged on the left with a small amber triangle and its code. Distance ticks and labels under the strip, a 96 x 8 px grayscale key with its range, and the axis title right-aligned.
- Source line at the bottom left.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines every 5 units and vertical gridlines every 10 units, all 0.8px #2C2E30, inside the plot only. No axis lines apart from the brighter zero line. Unit label ("nT") above the y labels.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 1.4px #F2F2F0 line with straight segments and round joins at full sampling resolution (do not smooth away noise). Anomalies get a hollow amber circle (r 9, 1.4px stroke, background fill) 20px above a positive peak or below a negative trough, joined to it by a 1px amber leader. For multiple series, draw the second trace in #8A8D90 at 1.2px and label both at their right ends.
- Bar chart: slender white bars (1px gap, square corners) diverging from the brighter zero line, with notable bars flagged by the same numbered amber circles and a matching interpretation list; the grayscale strip below repeats the values as cells.

Avoid: color ramps other than grayscale, glows, gradients, rounded corners, filled areas under the trace, and legends (the numbered list and grayscale key replace them).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the raster strip aligns exactly with the plot's x scale, every numbered marker appears in the list with a magnitude that matches the data, and the zero line reads as slightly brighter than the grid.
