Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Gilt Tooling" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the gold-tooled leather cover of a rare book. Deep oxblood grain, a gilt double-rule frame with corner fleurons, engraved small-capital titling, and marks drawn like gilt outlines with fine diagonal hatching pressed into the leather. Rich but restrained.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Leather ground: #3A1418, with a fine grain (fractal noise, base frequency 0.55, 2 octaves, very dark red at 22% opacity) and a radial darkening to #240A0D (75% at the edges) from about half the radius.
- Gilt: #C9A456 for rules, outlines, hatching and labels. Light gilt: #E6CC8A for the leading value. Deep gilt: #8E6F32 at the bottom of the title's gilt gradient (#E6CC8A to #C9A456 at 55% to #8E6F32, vertical).
- Debossed shadow: #240A0D, as a tight drop shadow (0 1px, blur 0.4, 90% opacity) under every gilt element so it reads pressed in.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Playfair Display SC: title (700, 32px, 1px letter-spacing, centered, filled with the gilt gradient, stating the finding), value labels (700, 18px gilt; 22px light gilt for the leading mark), and the imprint at the foot (400, 13px, 1.5px letter-spacing, 80% opacity).
- Cormorant: subtitle (500 italic, 19px gilt, centered), category names (600, 17px) with a second line in 500 italic 16px at 85% opacity, source line (italic 15px, 80% opacity).

Layout:
- Frame: a 2px gilt rule inset 24px and a 0.8px gilt rule inset 31px. A fleuron in each corner, centered 52px from both edges: four teardrop petals about 14px long rotated 45 degrees apart, around a 2.4px ring.
- Title centered at y 90, subtitle at y 120, then a small ornament: two 82px gilt hairlines with a 12px gilt lozenge between them.
- Plot from about y 178 to a baseline at y 474, x 104 to 856. Category names under the baseline, source bottom left and the imprint bottom right, both inside the frame between the lower fleurons.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines, no y axis; every mark carries its value in small caps. A single 1.8px gilt baseline extends 10px past the outer marks.

Marks:
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars about 62px wide drawn as a 1.6px gilt outline plus an inner 0.6px outline inset 4px (open at the baseline), filled with diagonal hatching: 1px gilt lines at 55% opacity every 5px, rotated 45 degrees. Values 12px above each bar.
- Line chart: a 1.6px gilt line with a parallel 0.6px line 4px below it, like a double fillet; the area under it filled with the same 45-degree hatch; points as small gilt lozenges (8px) with values in small caps above.

Avoid: flat yellow, bright or metallic-rainbow gradients on marks, solid gold fills, sans-serif type, gridlines, rounded corners, and ornaments that crowd the data.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the title fits between the upper fleurons, the hatching is even and crisp, the debossed shadow is subtle rather than blurry, and the leading value is the only light-gilt label.
