Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Generation Pyramid" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an heirloom family-history chart, like the frontispiece of a privately printed genealogy. Dark plum, dusty rose and slate blue, engraved capitals and thin gold rules between generations.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #241826 (dark plum) with a soft radial lift to #34233A in the center.
- First series (daughters, left): #D48A9B dusty rose. Second series (sons, right): #6A89BE slate blue.
- Accent gold for generation rules, generation labels, the title ornament and the peak category: #C7A96B.
- Primary text: #EFE6EC. Secondary text: #A8979F.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cinzel 700 for the title (30px, 2px letter-spacing, centered) and the generation roman numerals (17px, gold).
- Source Sans 3 for everything else: subtitle 16px #A8979F stating the finding with measure and unit; side headers 700 13px uppercase with 2px letter-spacing in each series color, including the series total; spine labels 600 13px (the peak row 700 in gold); value labels 600 13px in the series color; "GENERATION" kicker 600 9.5px with 1.6px letter-spacing in gold; axis numbers and source 12px.

Layout:
- Title centered at the top with a gold ornament beneath: two 136px 0.8px gold rules flanking a 10px gold diamond. Subtitle centered below.
- A central spine 80px wide holding the category labels (birth decades), with a 1px #EFE6EC rule at 35% opacity on each side of it. The side headers sit just above the bars, aligned to the spine edges; a small "BORN" label sits over the spine.
- Rows about 25px tall, oldest at the top.
- Generation labels at the far left (x 56), vertically centered on their group: "GENERATION" above a Cinzel numeral.
- Source bottom-left, a unit note bottom-right.

Axes and grid:
- Faint vertical reference lines (1px #EFE6EC at 8% opacity) every 10 units on both sides, with 12px numbers below the last row. No y axis line.
- Thin gold rules (0.8px, 75% opacity) across the full width between generation groups.

Marks:
- Bar chart: a population pyramid. Bars 17px tall with 1.5px corner radius, first series extending left from the spine, second series extending right. Counts at the outer end of every bar, 7px beyond it, in the series color.
- Line chart: a mirrored frequency polygon: two 2px lines, rose on the left and slate on the right, stepping through the rows from the spine outward, with 4px dots at each row and the same outer-end counts, spine, gold generation rules and labels.

Avoid: gradients on bars, drop shadows, a separate legend box (the side headers are the legend), neon colors and negative numbers on the axis (both sides count up from the spine).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the left and right bars start exactly at the spine edges, every count sits clear of the generation labels, and the peak row stated in the subtitle is really the largest.
