Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Finish Mix" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a dark charcoal board of wood finish samples. Flat matte wood tones stacked like material blocks, an engraved-feeling serif title and small, tracked sans labels.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #1B1B1B (charcoal).
- Series, bottom to top: #E3C9A0 (natural oak), #9C8468 (smoked oak), #7B4B2E (walnut), #383431 (black ash). Label text on the first two in #1B1B1B, on the last two in #F3EADC.
- Primary text: #EDE6DA. Secondary text: #9A938A. Gridlines and footer rule: #2C2A28. The black ash legend chip gets a 1px #5A5550 edge so it reads on the background.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Marcellus 400 for the title (34px, #EDE6DA, stating the finding).
- Josefin Sans for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 3px letter-spacing in #9A938A; subtitle 15px #9A938A; legend names 12px 600 uppercase with 1.8px letter-spacing; category labels 13px 600 uppercase with 2.2px letter-spacing; segment shares 13.5px 600; totals 15px 700; axis labels and footer 12px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow at y 58, title at y 100, subtitle at y 130, then a horizontal legend at y 158: 14px square chips each followed by its name, in stack order.
- Plot from x 116 to 904, baseline at y 512. Footer rule at y 552 with the source on the left and a rounding note on the right.

Axes and grid:
- 1px #2C2A28 horizontal gridlines with "$200k" style labels right-aligned 14px left of the plot. A 1px #9A938A baseline. No vertical gridlines, no y-axis line.

Marks:
- Bar chart: wide square-cornered stacked bars (86px at six categories), each segment a flat fill with a 1.5px charcoal gap between segments. Print each segment's share of the bar (e.g. "36%") centered inside it, and the bar total 12px above the top.
- Line chart: one 2.5px line per finish in the same colors (black ash drawn in #5A5550 so it reads), square 7px markers at each point, a stacked area version at full opacity with 1.5px charcoal separators when the parts sum to a whole, and direct end labels in the series colors.

Avoid: gradients, wood-grain textures, gloss, shadows, rounded corners, and any color outside the wood family.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every share label fits inside its segment with legible contrast, the gaps between segments are visible, the totals match the segment sums, and the black ash segments still read against the charcoal.
