Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Finding Aid" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from an archive's container list. Plain white paper, quiet scholarly typography, a strict hierarchy of series and subseries, dotted leaders and a single subdued gray-green. It should feel catalogued, not designed.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Primary data color: #5E7A6B (gray-green) for top-level marks, the eyebrow, the reference code and top-level range numbers.
- Secondary data tint: #9FB5A8 for child-level marks.
- Ink: #26302B for titles and labels. Muted: #7F8B84 for secondary text, values of child rows and scale numbers.
- Hairline rules: #D6DDD9. Scale guides: #EEF2EF. Leader dots: #AEB9B3.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- EB Garamond for headings: eyebrow (500, 13px, uppercase, 2.4px letter-spacing, gray-green, e.g. the collection name and dates), title (500, 31px, ink, stating the finding), top-level row labels in small caps style (600, 15px, uppercase, 0.8px letter-spacing, with a roman numeral prefix), and italic notes (400 italic, 13px, muted).
- Work Sans for data: subtitle (14px muted), column heads (600, 10px, uppercase, 1.6px letter-spacing, muted), child labels (13px ink, with outline numbers like "2.1"), values (12px; 600 ink for top-level rows, 400 muted for child rows), range column (12px).

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow top left; a reference code top right (Work Sans 500, 12px, 2px letter-spacing, gray-green, e.g. "MS 0417") with an italic page note under it.
- Title, subtitle, then a 1px ink rule; a row of column heads ("SERIES AND SUBSERIES", the measure, and a right-aligned range column such as "BOXES"); a 0.8px hairline under them.
- Rows about 18px tall for children and 20px for parents, with a 0.8px hairline and a few px of air between parent groups. Children are indented 28px.
- A 1px ink rule near the bottom with the source line at left (11px muted) and an italic total at right.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines. Faint vertical guides (#EEF2EF, 1px) at a few round values, labeled in 11px muted Work Sans under the last row.
- The range column on the far right is right-aligned: parent ranges in gray-green 500, child ranges in muted 400, using en dashes (1–26).

Marks:
- Bar chart (horizontal): all bars share one zero line at the start of the bar column. Parent rows get a solid #5E7A6B bar 9px tall; child rows get a thin #9FB5A8 bar 4px tall. Square ends. Value 8px past the bar end. Dotted leaders (1.3px stroke, round caps, dash 0.1 on 4.5 off) run from each child label to the bar column; draw the leader first and give the label a 12px white knockout stroke (paint-order: stroke) so dots stop cleanly at the text.
- Line chart: one line per top-level group in #5E7A6B at 1.8px (children in #9FB5A8 at 1.2px if shown), straight segments, small 3px square markers, direct labels at line ends in EB Garamond small caps with dotted leaders to the end point. Keep the right-hand range or value column as a muted printed list of end values.

Avoid: colors other than the gray-green family, bold fills, rounded corners, shadows, gridlines behind bars other than the faint guides, legends, and decorative icons.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every leader stops just short of its label, parent totals equal the sum of their children, ranges are continuous with no gaps or overlaps, and the hierarchy reads at a glance.
