Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Field Guide" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a numbered color plate from a classic ornithological field guide. Calm, exact and naturalist: warm white paper, a thin double rule frame, colors borrowed from plumage and every series named like a species, common name over Latin binomial.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Plate: #FBF8F1 (warm white) for the whole canvas.
- Series, in this order: #B5562F (rust), #6B7B3A (olive), #4F6D8A (slate blue), #D8A92B (goldfinch yellow).
- The yellow is too light for text: set yellow labels in #9A7414 instead, and keep #D8A92B for the line and dot only.
- Ink for title and frame: #3B342C. Secondary text, axis numerals and captions: #7B7063. Gridlines: #E3DBCB (hairline taupe).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Lora 600, 29px, #3B342C for the centered title, stating the finding.
- Lora italic 16px #7B7063 for the centered subtitle (measure, unit, place, years).
- Plate number: Lora 400 13px, 4px letter-spacing, uppercase roman numerals ("PLATE XIV"), #7B7063, centered at the top between two 48px hairline rules.
- Series labels: common name in Lora 600 15px in the series color; Latin binomial in Lora italic 13.5px #7B7063 directly beneath (18px lower).
- Axis numerals Lora 14px #7B7063; captions and source in Lora italic 12.5 to 14px.

Layout:
- Double rule frame: an outer 1.4px #3B342C rectangle inset 18px from the edges and an inner 0.6px rectangle inset 24px.
- Plate number at baseline 58, title at 98, subtitle at 126, all centered.
- Plot area x 92 to 660, y 178 to 486. The right margin (x 676 to 912) holds the species labels.
- Footer inside the frame at baseline 560: "Source: ..." on the left and a short method note on the right, both italic 12.5px.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 0.6px #E3DBCB; the zero baseline 0.9px #7B7063.
- No vertical axis line. Y numerals right-aligned 12px left of the plot, an italic caption ("Pairs") above them.
- X ticks 5px long, 0.8px #7B7063, numerals centered 24px below the baseline, every 5 years.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2px lines with straight segments and round joins, each ending in a filled dot (r 4.5) with a 1.5px plate-colored ring. The olive series is dashed (7 on, 4 off) because rust and olive collapse for red-green color blindness; keep the dash.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered bars in the same four plumage colors (grouped bars side by side with 2px gaps), a 0.9px baseline, values in Lora 13.5px above each bar in the series' label color; the olive bars get a fine 45 degree hatch in #FBF8F1 at 1px as their secondary cue. Label each group below in Lora 14px, and name the series in a top legend using the same common-name-over-Latin pairs and wing glyphs.

Labels and annotation:
- No legend box: label each line at its end. The label block starts 16px right of the plot with a fine-line wing silhouette (about 37 x 17 px: a curved leading edge, a scalloped trailing edge of five primaries and two covert lines, 1px stroke in the series color, no fill), then the common name and Latin name 58px right of the plot edge, and the final value right-aligned in the series label color, Lora 13.5px.
- Space label blocks at least 36px apart vertically; nudge them apart if the end values are close.

Avoid: a boxed legend, fills under lines, gradients, shadows, sans-serif fonts, bold gridlines, and any color outside the four plumage hues plus the neutrals.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every series has its wing glyph, common name and italic Latin name with no overlaps, the yellow labels use the darker #9A7414, the frame's two rules are both visible, and the percentage in the title matches the data.
