Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Feature Spread" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an evening-edition magazine feature spread. Elegant and intimate: deep plum, a romantic italic serif headline, two big stat callouts in a sidebar, and a delicate chart with hollow markers.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #2B1530 (deep plum).
- Series: #F7A8C0 (blush pink), #D9A441 (brushed gold), and #A28BB0 (dusty lilac, dashed) for a third series.
- Headline text: #F6ECF1. Body, axis labels and source: #BFA9C4. Dotted gridlines: #5A4262.
- The sidebar divider, kicker and folio use the gold.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Playfair Display italic 400 for the headline (36px, two lines 40px apart), the "min"-style unit after each stat (24px) and the folio (14px). Playfair Display 600 roman for the stat numerals (60px).
- Karla for everything else: kicker 700 11px uppercase with 3px letter-spacing; deck 400 14px on lines 20px apart; stat captions 13px; chart title 500 13px; axis labels 12px; direct series labels 700 13px in the series color with the latest value under them in 400 12px; source 11px.

Layout:
- Left sidebar x 48 to x 290: kicker at y 62, headline, a three-line deck, then two stat callouts, each preceded by a 48px x 1.5px rule in its series color, the numeral in that color and a one-line caption under it.
- A thin 0.8px #D9A441 vertical rule at x 316 from y 48 to y 552 divides sidebar from chart.
- The chart fills the right two-thirds: plot x 380 to x 830, y 96 to 492, with a small chart title above it and room at the right for direct labels.
- Source under the chart at y 572, italic gold folio bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- Faint dotted horizontal gridlines (1px #5A4262, dash 1 on 4 off, round caps) at every tick; value labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot.
- Year labels under the plot every five years. No axis lines, no vertical grid.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2px straight lines with round joins; a small hollow marker at every data point (r 3.6, filled with #2B1530, 1.6px stroke in the series color). The third series is dashed (5 on 4 off) so it stays distinct without color. Label each line directly at its right end instead of a legend.
- Bar chart: grouped slim bars with 2px rounded tops in blush, gold and lilac (lilac bars with a 1px lighter outline and 35% fill), dotted plum-gray gridlines, and the same sidebar with stat callouts.

Labels and annotation:
- The sidebar stats state the two most important changes as big numbers with units ("48 min", "less sleep a night, ages 13 to 18"). They must be arithmetically true for the data.

Avoid: pure black, bright saturated colors, filled markers, solid gridlines, legend boxes, and letting the chart cross the gold divider.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the stat callouts match the data, the three series stay distinguishable (color plus the dashed line), the direct labels do not collide, and the gold divider cleanly separates sidebar and chart.
