Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Family Register" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the handwritten-and-printed register page at the front of an old family bible. Quiet, reverent and archival: parchment, iron-gall ink, faint ruled lines and a single rubric-red heading.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F5EEDC (parchment), drawn as a page with a faint deckle edge (see Texture) on a #E6DAC0 surround.
- Ink for the title, data marks, axis line and labels: #4A3320 (iron-gall brown).
- Rubric red for the small eyebrow and the double margin rule: #8C3B2A.
- Secondary text (subtitle, axis numbers, notes, source): #8A7358.
- Ruled gridlines: #D8C9A8. Deckle edge outline: #CDBB95.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IM Fell English for the title (400, 36px, centered, #4A3320, stating the finding), the italic subtitle (16px, #8A7358), generation numerals inside the markers (13px, 11px for three-letter numerals), italic notes and annotations (14px) and the italic source line (13px).
- Libre Caslon Text for all figures: eyebrow 11px uppercase with 4px letter-spacing in rubric red; axis numbers 12px; value labels on markers 700 at 14px in ink.

Layout:
- Everything centered like a printed register: eyebrow at y 74, title at y 116, a title rule at y 134, subtitle at y 160, plot from about y 196 to y 490, source centered near the bottom.
- The title rule runs 360px wide, 0.9px ink, with a leaf-shaped fleuron (a pointed lozenge, a curl and a small dot) at each end pointing outward and a tiny open diamond (8px) in the middle.
- A register frame inset 40px from the canvas edge: 1.4px ink at 55% opacity, with a second 0.6px ink rule at 35% opacity 5px inside it.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal ruled lines at every 10 units: 0.9px #D8C9A8 at labeled values (every 20), 0.5px between. They run 12px past the plot on both sides.
- Two thin vertical rubric-red margin rules (0.8px, 45% opacity, 3px apart) just left of the plot, like a printed ledger margin. Y numbers sit to their left, right-aligned.
- A 1.1px ink baseline with 5px ticks at every data point; x labels only at the generation years.

Marks:
- Line chart: one 2.2px ink line with straight segments and round joins, 2.6px ink dots at ordinary points. Generation markers at every thirtieth year: a 13px-radius parchment circle with a 1.4px ink ring and a 0.5px inner ring at radius 10.2, holding a roman numeral (I, II, III ...). Each marker's value sits 22px above it in bold Libre Caslon.
- Bar chart: narrow square-cornered bars in #4A3320 at about 40% of the band on the same ruled page, with every thirtieth bar ringed by a small circled roman numeral centered 16px above its bold value. No fills other than ink.

Labels and annotation:
- A short italic IM Fell note in the top-left of the plot explaining the circled numerals.
- One annotation for the notable dip or turn: a 0.8px #8A7358 curved leader from the marker to a two-line italic note.

Texture:
- Deckle edge: the parchment page is an irregular outline inset 14px from the canvas, jittered by up to 1.6px every 9px, over the darker surround.
- A soft radial aging vignette: parchment transparent in the center to #E3D3B0 at 70% opacity at the edges.

Avoid: bright colors, sans-serif type, heavy gridlines, drop shadows, smooth curves (the ink line is straight between entries), and more than one line.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the fleurons sit exactly at the ends of the title rule, the numerals are centered in their circles, the deckle edge is faint rather than torn, and the title's numbers match the data.
