Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Faculty Report" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a university's institutional research report. Sober, collegiate and exact: a deep maroon header band, one serif family, two quiet colors, a small data table beneath the chart and numbered footnotes.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Header band: #7A1F2B (deep maroon) with a 3px #B5ACA3 strip under it; header text white, the italic subline and page reference #E9D9DB.
- Current period: #7A1F2B. Comparison period: #B5ACA3 (warm gray).
- Ink: #2A2326. Secondary text: #6F6660. Gridlines and table dividers: #E4DFDA. Table header row tint: #F6F2EF.

Typography (Google Fonts): Spectral only, with lining tabular figures (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums tabular-nums).
- Header: institution name 700 15px uppercase with 3.2px letter-spacing; italic 13px office name beneath; report name 600 12px uppercase with 2px letter-spacing on the right, "Table 3.1 | Page 7" 12px beneath.
- Title 700 30px #2A2326 stating the finding; subtitle 15px #6F6660 with measure, unit and years and a superscript footnote number.
- Axis labels 13px #6F6660; category labels 14px 500 (the lead category 700); value labels 700 12px maroon; legend 600 14px; table 13px; footnotes 12px; source italic 12px.

Layout:
- Header band 64px tall across the full width with 56px side margins. Title at y 112, subtitle at y 138, legend (14px square swatches, current period first) right-aligned on the subtitle line.
- Chart from x 116 to 904, baseline y 390, top y 172.
- A three-row table directly under the category labels (y 428 to 506): rows for last period, this period and "Change", each 26px tall, columns centered under each group. 1.5px maroon rules above and below the table, a 1px divider above the Change row, the first row tinted #F6F2EF. Change values are signed with a true minus sign and one decimal; the lead category's change in maroon.
- A short 0.8px ink rule at y 526, then numbered footnotes ("1 Headcount at the census date...") and "Source: ..." at the bottom left, and a total line ("Total: 19,770 to 20,670") bold at the bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines except a 1.2px ink baseline. Horizontal gridlines at three or four round values, 1px #E4DFDA. Thousands separators on every number.

Marks:
- Bar chart: grouped pairs of square-cornered 40px bars with a 4px gap, comparison gray on the left and current maroon on the right. Value label above the current bar only.
- Line chart: current period as a 2.5px maroon line with 4px maroon dots; comparison as a 2px #B5ACA3 line with 3.5px gray dots; value label on the latest maroon point; the same table under the chart with one column per x value.

Avoid: gradients, rounded corners, shadows, extra colors, sans-serif type, and value labels on both series (the table carries the rest).

When you're done, render the chart and check that every table column sits exactly under its group, the change percentages and totals are arithmetically right, and the footnote numbers in the text match the notes.
