Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Factory Bands" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a 1930s works production board bolted to the factory wall. Heavy, industrial and proud: warm gray paint, gunmetal bars with chrome trim bands, one signal red record and a riveted steel baseline.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #E2DDD3 (warm gray).
- Bars: #4A5058 (gunmetal). The single highlighted bar (record or latest): #C8302B (signal red).
- Chrome bands: a horizontal gradient #9EA4AB, #D7DBE0 at 35%, #F4F6F8 at 55%, #A9AFB6.
- Ink, baseline and title: #151515. Secondary text: #5E5A52. Gridlines: #C4BEB2. Rivet dots: #8C9096.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Big Shoulders Stencil Display 800 for the title: 46px uppercase, 0.5px letter-spacing, #151515, stating the finding with numbers.
- Barlow for everything else: subtitle 17px 400 #5E5A52; tag pill and eyebrow 12px 600-700 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing; axis labels 14px 500; value labels 15px 600 (17px 700 red on the highlighted bar); year capsule labels 13px 600; annotation 14px (first line 600); source 12px; footer tag 11px 600 uppercase, 2.4px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 56px margins. A black pill (160 x 22, radius 11) with the plant name in page-colored caps, followed by the eyebrow in #5E5A52. Title baseline y 116, subtitle y 146.
- Plot from x 104 to 904, baseline at y 470. A 2px black rule at y 542; source left and a small uppercase tag right at y 568.

Axes and grid:
- Three or four 1px #C4BEB2 gridlines with right-aligned labels 12px left of the plot. No y-axis line.
- Baseline: an 8px solid #151515 bar extending 8px past the plot on each side, with r 1.8 #8C9096 rivet dots every 20px along its center line.
- Category labels sit in capsules below the baseline: 50 x 22, radius 11, 1.4px gunmetal outline and no fill; the highlighted category's capsule is filled signal red with white text.

Marks:
- Bar chart: vertical bars 46px wide (about 63% of the band), top corners rounded at 12px, square at the baseline. Each bar carries three horizontal chrome bands near its top at 16, 25 and 34px below the top edge (4px, 3px and 3px tall) spanning the full bar width. A subtle overlay gradient across each bar (white 10% on the left, clear in the middle, black 16% on the right) gives a rolled-steel curve. Value labels 10px above each bar.
- Line chart: a 5px gunmetal line with round joins, each point a r 7 gunmetal disc carrying a short chrome band across its middle, the highlighted point in signal red; draw the same riveted 8px baseline under the plot and the same year capsules.
- Annotate the low point with a thin #5E5A52 leader and a two-line note.

Avoid: more than one red mark, pastel colors, thin delicate baselines, square bar tops, and chrome bands that fall into the value labels.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the chrome bands still fit inside the shortest bar, the stencil title shows its stencil breaks, the rivets are evenly spaced along the baseline, and the title's arithmetic matches the data.
