Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Exposure Bracket" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a well-made camera guide. Clean, modern and instructive: the bars step through tones like a bracketed exposure sequence, one warm yellow bar marks the winner, and the category axis reads like the exposure scale in a viewfinder.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F9F9F7 (soft white).
- Tonal ramp for ordinary bars, interpolated evenly in RGB across the categories in order: from #1F1F1F (deep shadow) to #CFCFCA (blown highlight).
- Highlight bar: #F2C14E (warm yellow); its bracket stroke #C99A1E; its callout text #8A6A12. Only one highlighted mark.
- Ink (title, value labels, baseline, scale, whole-step labels): #1A1A1A.
- Secondary text and minor labels: #6A6A66. Gridlines: #E4E4DF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Space Grotesk for the eyebrow (600 12px uppercase, 2.4px letter-spacing, #6A6A66), the title (700 29px, -0.4px letter-spacing, #1A1A1A, stating the finding with numbers), the bracketed category labels (700 14px for major steps, 500 12px for minor steps) and the end captions (600 11px uppercase, 2px letter-spacing).
- Work Sans for the subtitle (400 15px #6A6A66, measure and unit plus the reference value), y tick labels (500 12px #6A6A66), value labels (600 14px #1A1A1A; 700 17px for the highlight), the callout (600 13px) and the source (400 12px).

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at the top, title and subtitle under it, then the plot (about x 92 to 904, y 176 to 432).
- Below the baseline: a viewfinder scale 22px down, then bracketed category labels 34px below that, then a caption row with "UNDER" at the left end, the axis name centered and "OVER" at the right end.
- Source bottom left, page number ("p. 42") bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- Gridlines at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 in 1px #E4E4DF, tick labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot, the top one with a % sign.
- A 1.2px #1A1A1A baseline.
- The viewfinder scale: a 1px line spanning the first to last category centers, tick marks rising from it every third of a step (4px tall, 1px) and taller at whole steps (9px, 1.4px), with a small filled up-pointing triangle (10 x 6 px) under the reference category (0 on an exposure scale).
- Category labels sit inside square bracket marks: open brackets drawn as paths, 20px tall with 5px serifs, 36px apart for major steps at 1.5px and 44px apart for minor steps at 1px in #6A6A66. The highlighted category's bracket is 2px #C99A1E. Use a true minus sign (U+2212) for negatives and a plus sign for positives.

Marks:
- Bar chart: bars 66% of the band, 2px corner radius, filled from the tonal ramp by position (first category darkest, last palest), the winning bar #F2C14E. Values centered 9px above each bar. A short callout ("Best step, protects highlights") centered 38px above the winning bar in #8A6A12.
- Line chart: a 2.5px #1A1A1A line over the same bracketed axis, with each point drawn as an 11px circle filled from the tonal ramp and a 1.2px #1A1A1A ring, the winning point in #F2C14E at 14px, and values above the points. Optionally a very light area fill (#1A1A1A at 5%).

Avoid: color other than the one yellow, gradients inside bars, shadows, heavy borders, a legend (the ramp is self-explanatory with the UNDER and OVER captions), and hyphens in place of minus signs.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the ramp runs dark to pale in category order, the palest bar is still visible against the page, only one bar is yellow, the brackets are centered on their bars, and the title's numbers match the data.
