Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Exoplanet Sizes" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a science museum or observatory annual report figure. A near-black field with a soft vignette, slim muted blue columns, and each value crowned by a small lit sphere whose tint carries a second variable. Elegant, dark and quiet, with a wide geometric display face.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #07080B, overlaid with a radial vignette (cx 50%, cy 45%, r 75%): #151A24 at 0, #07080B at 60%, #010102 at 100%.
- Bars: a vertical gradient from #4A6A94 (muted blue, top) to #1E2C44 (bottom).
- Sphere tint scale (the second variable, here temperature): #8FB8FF (cool blue) at the low end, #F2E6C9 (pale sand) in the middle, #FF8A4C (warm orange) at the high end, interpolated in RGB (200 K, 600 K and 1,500 K here).
- Reference lines and their labels: #C9D4E6. Title and value labels: #EEF1F6. Secondary text: #8A93A6. Gridlines: #1C2230. Baseline: #39415A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Syne 700, 29px, #EEF1F6 for the title, stating the finding in words ("Six of ten ...").
- Inter for everything else: eyebrow 11px 600 uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing in #8A93A6; subtitle 14.5px 400 #8A93A6 with measure and unit; value labels 13px 600 #EEF1F6; category codes 10.5px 500 with 0.4px letter-spacing in #8A93A6; tick labels 12px; reference labels 11.5px 600 #C9D4E6; legend title 10px 600 uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing; source and notes 12px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow y 56, title y 96, subtitle y 122. Plot from x 104 to 904, y 186 to 480.
- The tint legend sits in the upper left of the plot area (where the bars are short): its caps title, then four 7.5px spheres with labels spaced 78px apart.
- Source at bottom left and an explanatory note about the category codes at bottom right, both at y 572.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis line. A few 1px #1C2230 horizontal gridlines; y tick labels right-aligned 14px left of the plot. Drop any tick label that would collide with a reference label.
- Reference lines (Earth = 1 and Neptune = 3.88 here): 1px #C9D4E6 at 70% opacity, dashed 5 on 5 off, full plot width, labeled at the left in the tick column ("Earth", "Neptune").
- A 1px #39415A baseline. Category codes centered 22px below it.

Marks:
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered bars 20px wide in the blue gradient, sorted by value. At the top of each bar, centered on the bar's end, a 12.5px sphere: a radial gradient with its focal highlight at (36%, 32%), r 75%, stops white at 95% opacity at 0, the tint at 18%, the tint mixed 55% toward black at 70% and 85% toward black at 100%. Behind each sphere a 15px halo of the tint at 35% opacity blurred with stdDeviation 5 (filter region covering the whole canvas). The value label sits 22px above the bar end.
- Line chart: a 1.5px #4A6A94 line with the same lit spheres (10px) at every point, each tinted by the second variable, drop lines from each sphere to the baseline in the bar gradient at 1.5px, and value labels above the spheres.

Avoid: stars, starfields, nebula textures, bright saturated blues on the bars, rounded bar ends, heavy gridlines, glows on text, and a legend that overlaps any bar or label.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the title's count matches the data between the two reference values, every value label clears its sphere and the legend, the tint of each sphere matches its temperature, and the halos are unclipped.
