Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Engineering Pad" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a neatly worked homework sheet on pale green engineering computation paper. Hand lettered in careful drafting capitals, ink drawn over pencil construction lines that were never erased, with a GIVEN / FIND block and a double-boxed final answer.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #E4EFD8 (pale green). Back-printed grid: #C9DCB8. Printed heading lines, labels and left margin rule: #5E9A4B.
- Ink (bars, axes, lettering, answer box): #1D2A3A.
- Pencil (construction lines, subtitle, source): #8A8F86.
- Red pencil for limits, allowable values and failing checks: #B5452F.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Architects Daughter for all handwriting: title 25px, uppercase, with a double underline (two 1.1px ink rules 4.5px apart); subtitle 15px in pencil; tick labels 14px; value labels 18px; category labels 14px uppercase; notes 15px with 16px underlined "GIVEN:" and "FIND:" headings; answer box 18px and 16px; source 13px.
- Barlow Condensed 600 at 11px, 1.5px letter-spacing, in #5E9A4B for the printed field labels only (NAME, DATE, SUBJECT, SHEET).

Layout:
- Heading row across the top: four printed labels at y 22, each with a 0.8px green fill-in line at y 46 and a handwritten value on it. Under it a printed double rule (1.6px at y 58, 0.8px at y 62) and a 0.8px green left margin line at x 40 down the page.
- Title at y 100 stating the finding, subtitle at y 138 with measure, unit and conditions.
- Chart from about x 104 to 606, baseline y 450, top y 176. Right column from x 740 with GIVEN and FIND notes. Double-boxed answer at the bottom right (x 712, y 470, 200 x 70): 2px ink outer box, 1px inner box inset 5px, paper fill.

Texture:
- The paper grid is printed on the back and shows through: 16px cells (0.7px lines) with every fifth line heavier (1.3px), all #C9DCB8, softened with a 0.6px Gaussian blur at 85% opacity. It sits under everything and is never crisp.

Axes and grid:
- Ink axes 2px: y-axis plus baseline, the baseline overrunning the last bar by 16px. Ink ticks 6px long on the y-axis.
- Pencil construction lines: faint 0.6px #8A8F86 gridlines at 55% opacity, a pencil frame line at the top and right, dotted (2 on, 3 off) pencil projection lines from each bar top back to the y-axis, and a pencil center line (10-3-2-3 dash) through each bar extending past it.

Marks:
- Bar chart: 58px square-cornered bars outlined in 1.6px ink with 45 degree ink hatching (7px pitch, 1.1px lines, 55% opacity). The answer bar gets cross-hatching (6px pitch, 90% opacity) and a 2.4px outline. Value labels 18px on a small paper-colored knockout above each bar. Under each category, a small ink sketch of the item (here a beam cross-section) above its label.
- Line chart: a 2px ink line with straight ruled segments and small open circle points (r 4, 1.6px ink stroke, paper fill), pencil projection lines from each point to both axes, pencil dotted lines at every gridline, and the answer point circled twice in ink.
- Limits or targets: a 1.6px red-pencil dashed line (12 on, 5 off) across the plot with a two-line red label at its right end, e.g. "ALLOW" / "L/800 = 5.0".

Avoid: color fills, gradients, rounded corners, a crisp front grid, typed-looking fonts for handwriting, and any shadow.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the back grid reads as faint and soft, pencil lines are clearly lighter than ink, the limit label does not touch the notes column, and the boxed answer matches the data.
