Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "E-Ink Reader" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the chart shown on the screen of an e-ink e-reader. Paper grey, four ink tones and no color at all, slightly soft like a low-resolution panel, with the small imperfections of electronic paper (dithered greys, a ghost of the last page refresh).

Colors (use these exact values):
- Surroundings: #D6D3CC behind the device.
- Device bezel: #2E2D2B, a rounded rectangle 14px in from the left and right and 12px from top and bottom, 34px corner radius, with a very faint top-to-bottom white sheen (10% to 0% opacity).
- Screen: #E9E7E1 (e-ink paper), inset 28px from the bezel sides and 24px from top and bottom, 5px radius, with a 1px black edge at 25% opacity.
- Only four inks on the screen: #1A1A1A near black, #4A4A48 charcoal, #8A8984 mid grey, #C4C2BC pale grey. No other colors, no transparency tricks for tints: greys come from dithering.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Literata 600 for the title, 26px, near black, stating the finding.
- Atkinson Hyperlegible for everything else: subtitle 15px 400 charcoal; legend 14px 700; axis labels 13px 400 charcoal; end values 15px 700; status bar and footer 12px (700 for status items).
- Soften the whole screen content with a 0.35px Gaussian blur so it reads as a physical panel, not a crisp monitor.

Layout:
- A status bar across the top of the screen: a label ("Reading log") at left, the time centered, the battery percentage and a small battery icon (24 x 12, 2px radius, 1.5px charcoal stroke, charcoal fill level, a 2.5 x 5 nub) at right, 12px text. A 1px pale grey rule under it.
- Title about 40px below the rule, subtitle 28px under it, then a legend row, then the plot. 24px inner margins from the screen edge.
- Footer: "Source: ..." at left, and at right an e-reader progress bar (160px long, 3px thick, pale grey track with a near black filled portion) followed by a percentage.

Axes and grid:
- Y gridlines 1px pale grey, dotted (2 on, 3 off); baseline 1.5px charcoal solid. Y labels at left in charcoal, the top one with its unit ("10 h").
- X labels centered under each period ("Wk 1", then just numbers). No axis lines besides the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: step lines (step-after), 3px strokes, miter joins. Separate series by ink and dash, not color: the lead series near black solid, the second charcoal dashed (9 on, 5 off), the third mid grey solid. Under the lead series only, an ordered-dither fill: a 4 x 4 pattern with 1px charcoal dots at (0,0) and (2,2) and a mid grey dot at (2,0). Direct value labels at the right end of each line.
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars in the same inks (near black, charcoal, mid grey), or the lead bars filled with the same ordered-dither pattern and a 2px near black outline. Value labels in 15px 700 Atkinson above bars.
- Ghosting: behind every line (or bar outline), draw a copy of the mark in pale grey, 3px, 80% opacity, offset 7px left and 5px down, clipped to the plot area, like the previous page refresh still visible on the panel.

Avoid: any hue, gradients on the screen, glows, drop shadows, anti-aliased smooth tints instead of dither, rounded chart marks, thin hairline strokes under 1px.

When you're done, render the chart and check that only the four inks appear on the screen, series are distinguishable in pure greyscale (dash and tone), the dither reads as grey at thumbnail size, and the ghost copies never pass outside the plot area.
