Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Yard Dwell" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a terminal operations board for a hump classification yard. Cool steel gray, a schematic yard diagram across the top, crisp semi-condensed type, thin operational lines against a thick dashed goal.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #EEF0F2 (light steel gray). Diagram strip background: #E3E7EB with a 1px #9AA3AE rule under it.
- Series, in order: #EA580C (rail orange), #15803D (green), #1D4ED8 (blue), #52525B (gray).
- Goal line: #0B0B0C. Primary text: #1F2328. Secondary text: #5B636E. Gridlines: #D3D8DE. Track lines in the diagram: #9AA3AE. Shaded event window: #DCE3EB with its label in #3B4A5C.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Saira Semi Condensed for everything: title 700 29px #1F2328 stating the finding; subtitle 400 15.5px #5B636E with measure, unit and period; axis labels 500 13px; month labels 600 12.5px uppercase with 1px letter-spacing; direct labels 700 13.5px in the series color with the latest value in 500 13.5px #1F2328; diagram labels 700 11px uppercase with 2px letter-spacing followed by a 500 muted track count; small caps notes 600 to 700 at 9 to 11px with 1.2 to 1.6px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- A full-width strip 112px tall at the top holds a schematic hump yard drawn left to right on one centerline: an inbound lead, a receiving yard of 5 parallel tracks fanning out and back in (8px apart), a small black hump triangle labelled "HUMP", a classification bowl of 9 tracks (5.2px apart), and a departure yard of 4 tracks (9px apart), then the outbound main. Tracks are 1.4px #9AA3AE lines; each track carries a row of small 8 x 3.6px #52525B cars at 55% opacity. Label each yard under the strip ("RECEIVING 5 TRK", "CLASSIFICATION 32 TRK", "DEPARTURE 6 TRK") and put "INBOUND" and "OUTBOUND" at the ends.
- Title about 38px below the strip, subtitle under it, then the plot from x 76 to 790. Direct labels in a right column out to 920.
- Footer: "Source: ..." on the left and the railroad and department in 600 11px uppercase on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #D3D8DE gridlines on a step that lands exactly on the goal value (e.g. every 6 hours: 12, 18, 24 ...). Y labels 13px 500 #5B636E right-aligned, with a tiny "HOURS" unit label above them.
- A 1.2px #1F2328 baseline with a 4px tick per period; label only the first period of each month.

Marks:
- Line chart: each series a 2px straight-segment line with round joins, drawn over a 5px #EEF0F2 halo so crossings stay readable. The green series is dashed (7 3) as a second cue next to the orange. End each line with a 3.5px dot and a thin 1px elbow leader to its direct label; nudge labels at least 19px apart.
- Goal: a thick 3.5px #0B0B0C line dashed 12 6 across the full plot, explained in a small key box in an empty corner (steel fill, 1px #D3D8DE stroke) reading "NETWORK GOAL, 24 HOURS".
- Event window: shade the storm weeks in #DCE3EB behind everything with "WINTER STORM" in 700 11px at the top, and label the worst peak directly ("Kettle River peak 44.4 h").
- Bar chart: grouped square-cornered columns in the four series colors (the green one with a 45 degree hatch overlay as its second cue), the goal drawn as the same thick dashed black line across the groups, and the event window shaded behind the affected groups.

Avoid: gradients, drop shadows, rounded bars, a boxed legend when direct labels fit, more than four series colors, and a busy yard diagram (keep it light gray and thin).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the goal line sits exactly on a gridline value, the yard diagram reads as a hump yard at thumbnail size, direct labels do not collide, and the title's claim is true for every series.
