Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Duck Curve" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure page from a grid operator's seasonal reliability report. Plain, authoritative and engineered: a white page, a thin navy running header, two clean lines and a few precise annotations that explain what the shape means.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Header strip and page-number box: #1E3A5F (report navy).
- First series (the reference or total, e.g. demand): #1E3A5F. Second series (the derived or highlighted one, e.g. net load): #E57A2E (orange). The figure label ("FIGURE 3.2") and the headline annotation number also use #E57A2E.
- Shaded gap between the two lines: #F7E6A0 (pale solar yellow), solid, with its label in #7A6418.
- Body ink, zero baseline, ticks and brackets: #1F2933. Secondary text: #5B6878. Gridlines and footer rule: #E3E7EC.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Barlow Semi Condensed 600 for the title (29px, navy, sentence case, stating the finding with numbers), the header strip name (12px, uppercase, 2px letter-spacing, white), the figure label (12px, uppercase, 1.6px letter-spacing, orange) and the page number (14px white). 700 at 20px for the headline annotation.
- Barlow for everything else: subtitle 15px #5B6878 (measure, unit, period), axis labels 13px #5B6878, direct series labels 14px 700 in the series color, annotation text 13px, footer 12px #5B6878.

Layout:
- A full-width 30px navy strip at the very top with the organization name at left (x 40) and the report title at right in 12px #C9D5E3.
- Figure label at y 64, title at y 98, subtitle at y 124, all at x 40.
- Plot from x 88 to 872 and y 160 to 470. A small bold "GW" unit label above the y-axis labels.
- Footer: a 1px #E3E7EC rule at y 532, two lines of 12px source and definition text on the left ("Source: illustrative data. ..."), and on the right a 42 x 24 navy box with the white page number, preceded by the report short name in 12px #5B6878.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #E3E7EC, at round values; the zero line 1.2px #1F2933. Y labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot.
- No y-axis line. X axis ticks 5px long, 1px #1F2933, below the baseline every 3 hours (or every few categories), labels centered 22px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: two 2.5px lines with straight segments and round joins, no markers. Shade the area between them in #F7E6A0 and name it inside the shape ("Solar output") in 14px 600 #7A6418 with a 12px detail line under it. Label each line directly near a clear stretch of it; no legend box.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered bars (about 55% of the band) in #1E3A5F with the one highlighted category in #E57A2E; if there are two series, draw the second as #F7E6A0 bars behind the first (overlapping, wider by 30%) so the difference reads like the shaded gap. Value labels 13px 600 above the highlighted bars only.

Labels and annotation:
- Mark the extreme point with a white-filled circle (r 4.5, 2px orange stroke) and a 0.8px #1F2933 leader down to a 13px 600 label ("Low: 8.6 GW at 13:00").
- For the key change, put 3.5px orange dots on the start and end points, run 0.8px dashed (3 3) #1F2933 guides from each to a square bracket (1.2px, 6px arms) in clear space beside the rise, and set the change beside it: "+13 GW in 3 hours" in Barlow Semi Condensed 700 20px orange, then two 13px lines explaining the period and cause. Compute the change from the data.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, rounded corners, dark backgrounds, legends in boxes, more than two line colors, markers on every point, and decorative icons.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the shaded area sits exactly between the two lines, the annotated numbers match the data, the bracket spans exactly the two marked points, and no label touches a line.
