Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Dot Over Bar" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the transparent bar chart of a careful lab figure. Every individual measurement sits on top of its group mean, so the reader sees the spread and the sample size, not just the average.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Primary ink and axes: #222629. Secondary text and brackets: #6B7075.
- Control group bars: #C9CCCF (light gray). Treatment group bars: #3C9A94 (muted teal).
- Individual data points: #2B2F33 at 85% opacity with a 0.8px #FFFFFF outline. Error whiskers: #000000.

Typography (Google Fonts): Open Sans for everything.
- Title 700, 25px #222629, stating the finding. Subtitle 400, 15px #6B7075 with unit, statistic and "each dot one animal".
- Legend 600, 13px; tick labels 13px; y-axis title 600, 13px rotated; group size labels 12px #6B7075; category names 700, 15px with a 13px #6B7075 sub-label below; change labels 700, 14px.

Layout:
- Title, subtitle and a one-line legend (two 14px squares plus a dot key) stacked at the top-left, 56px margin.
- Plot from about x 124 to 900 with the baseline at y 460. Categories evenly spaced; in each, two 58px bars 14px apart.
- Below each bar "n = 8" style sample sizes 20px under the baseline, then the category name and sub-label.
- Source line at the bottom-left, 12px #6B7075.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines. A 1px #222629 left spine offset 10px from the first bar with outward 6px major ticks and 3px minor ticks halfway between; a 1px #222629 baseline.

Marks:
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars at the group mean starting at zero. Overlay every observation as a dot (r 3.4) jittered horizontally within the middle 62% of the bar. Then a 1.3px black SEM whisker centered on the bar with 18px caps. Above each pair, a 1px #6B7075 bracket 16px above the highest dot or whisker, with the percent change between group means in 700 14px; the largest change is colored #3C9A94, the rest #222629.
- Line chart: two lines (control 2px #C9CCCF darkened to #9A9EA2 for the stroke, treatment 2.5px #3C9A94), mean markers as 7px squares in the group color, all individual observations as the same small dark dots jittered around each x position, the same black SEM whiskers, and n labels under the x axis.

Avoid: hiding the raw points, stars or p-values not computed from the data, gridlines, gradients, shadows, rounded bars, 3D and bright colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every dot stays within its own bar, whiskers are drawn on top of the dots, n labels match the number of dots, bars start at zero, and the change labels are computed from the plotted means.
