Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Dependency Ratio" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a national statistical yearbook. Sober, precise and a little old-fashioned: a boxed table number, double rules, a serif headline that states the finding, and a definitions block at the foot. Observed data is solid; projected data is dashed over a pale gray band.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F9F6F0 (warm off-white).
- Series 1: #3F6E9A (muted blue), used for the youth or first series.
- Series 2: #A0452E (brick), used for the old-age or second series.
- Ink (title, rules, axis baseline, census rule, crossing circle): #2A2622.
- Secondary text: #6B645B. Gridlines: #E4DED3. Projection band: #ECE9E4.

Typography (Google Fonts), lining figures everywhere (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums; Alegreya Sans defaults to oldstyle figures):
- Source Serif 4 semibold (600) for the title (29px, -0.2px letter-spacing, sentence case, states the finding) and the annotation headline (15px).
- Alegreya Sans for everything else: running head 12px 500 uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing (the boxed table number in 700); subtitle 16px #6B645B with measure, unit and period; axis labels 14px (tabular); band label 11px 700 uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing; census label 13px italic 500; end labels 15px 700 in the series color with a 13.5px value line under them; foot notes 13px, the second line italic.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Running head at the top: the table number ("TABLE 4.12") in an 86 x 24 px box with a 1px ink border, then a category label, and the publication name right-aligned. Under it a double rule: 1.4px ink with a 0.5px ink hairline 3px below.
- Title about 44px under the rule, subtitle 26px under the title.
- Plot from x 96 to 800, y 178 to 478, leaving about 100px on the right for end labels.
- Foot block: a 0.8px ink rule at y 530, then two 13px lines: "Source: ..." and an italic "Note: ..." with definitions. A bold page folio number right-aligned on the second line.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #E4DED3, at 20-unit steps; y labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot.
- A 1.2px ink baseline with 5px tick marks every 10 years and year labels 24px below it. The census or last observed year label is 700 in ink; the others are regular #6B645B.
- A 1px ink vertical rule at the last observed year running from the top of the band to the baseline, with an italic label ("Census 2020") right-aligned just left of it.

Marks:
- Line chart: straight segments. Observed part 2.8px solid; projected part 2.4px dashed (7 on, 5 off) in the same color. Hollow circle markers (r 3.4, page fill, 1.8px series stroke) at each decade of observed data only; a filled r 4 dot at the final projected point. Behind the projected period, a #ECE9E4 band from the observed/projected boundary to the right edge of the plot, extending 26px above the plot top, with a small "PROJECTION, MEDIUM VARIANT" label inside its top left.
- Where two series cross, compute the crossing by linear interpolation and draw a 13px radius 1.3px ink circle around it with a 2.6px ink dot at the center, plus a 1px ink leader to a two-line note: serif "Lines cross c. 2028" and a sans line with the value.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered columns (about 55% of the band) in #3F6E9A for observed periods; projected periods drawn as 1.4px dashed #3F6E9A outlines with a #ECE9E4 fill, on the same gray projection band. A second series sits beside the first in #A0452E with the same observed/projected treatment. Values 13.5px above bars in the series color.

Labels and annotation:
- Label series directly: the series name at the right end and a small starting value near the first point. No legend box.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, rounded corners, bright colors, more than two series colors, smoothing the lines, and any legend box.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the dashed segments start exactly at the census year, the crossing circle sits on the true intersection, the title's year matches the computed crossing, and no label touches a line or the band label.
