Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Deep Sea" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the deep ocean at night. Calm and elegant: dark water fading to the abyss, drifting marine snow, and marks that glow softly like bioluminescent creatures.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Water: a vertical gradient from #0B3F4C at the top through #062230 at 42% to #020A10 at the bottom.
- Glow ramp: #3EE6D0 teal to #9B7BFF violet. Color categories or series along this ramp (for ordered categories, interpolate from teal at the first to violet at the last).
- Text: #D8F3F0 (title, marine snow). Muted: #6FA3AE (subtitle, axis labels). Value labels: #A9D9DA, the key value in #D8F3F0. Zone labels: #8FC3C8. Source: #4F7C86.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Title: Cormorant Garamond 500, 36px, sentence case, stating the finding. Annotations: Cormorant Garamond 500 italic, 16px.
- Everything else: Jost. Subtitle 16px 300. Value labels 16px 400. Category labels 13px 400. Axis labels 12px 400. Source 12px 300.

Layout:
- Title and subtitle top left with generous space. Plot below; categories under the baseline; optional grouping brackets (1px #6FA3AE at 50%, 6px end ticks) with italic serif group names under them; source bottom left.

Background effects:
- Caustics: over the top 190px only, an feTurbulence (type turbulence, baseFrequency 0.011 0.028, 2 octaves) turned into bright ripple lines with a color matrix, masked by a gradient that fades to nothing by 190px, at 20% opacity.
- Light shafts: three long trapezoids from the top edge, filled with #D8F3F0 fading from 9% to 0.
- Marine snow: about 170 seeded particles, radius 0.5 to 1.9px, #D8F3F0 at 12 to 57% opacity, about a third blurred (1.4px) for depth of field. Keep them out of text areas.

Axes and grid:
- Dotted gridlines at #D8F3F0 9% (1px dots, 5px gaps, round caps). A thin baseline at 22%. Y labels right-aligned left of the plot. No axis lines.

Marks:
- Bar chart: each bar is a translucent glowing column 40px wide: a vertical gradient of its ramp color from 62% at the top through 26% at 35% to 4% at the base, 0.8px side edges at 35%, and a 16px blurred haze copy at 30% behind it. On top sits a jellyfish-bell cap (10px wider than the bar, 16px tall dome with a scalloped underside) filled with a radial gradient from white to the ramp color, bloomed with a 9px blur merged twice under it, plus a 62 x 52px radial halo of the ramp color at 42% fading out. Four thin tentacle wisps (0.9px #D8F3F0 at 16 to 28%, gentle sine waves) trail down inside each column. Value above the cap.
- Line chart: a 2px smooth line in the ramp color with the same bloom, an area fill below as a vertical gradient from the line color at 35% to 0, and small glowing bell-shaped dots at key points. Multiple series step along the teal to violet ramp; label each at its right end.

Avoid: hard edges, opaque fills, saturated warm colors, heavy gridlines, bold or condensed type, and particles over text.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the glow reads without washing out the value labels, the caustics stay at the surface, and no particle lands on a letter.
