Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Danger Scale" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an avalanche center's season review bulletin. Plain white, serious and immediately readable: the five standard danger colors tint the background in horizontal bands, and one thick black step line walks through them.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Main ink and the step line: #1A1F2B. Secondary text: #5A6170. Rules: #DADDE3.
- Level colors: 1 Low #50B848 (green), 2 Moderate #FFF200 (yellow), 3 Considerable #F7941E (orange), 4 High #ED1C24 (red), 5 Extreme #231F20 (black).
- Background band tints use the same colors at low opacity: Low 0.16, Moderate 0.24, Considerable 0.18, High 0.14, Extreme 0.10.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Archivo for the eyebrow (700, 12px, uppercase, 1.8px letter-spacing, #5A6170), the title (800, 30px, -0.4px letter-spacing, #1A1F2B, stating the finding, e.g. "Danger reached Considerable or higher on 28 of 136 days"), column headers ("DANGER LEVEL", "DAYS": 700, 11px, 1.6px letter-spacing), level numbers in chips (800, 15px) and day counts (800, 18px).
- Source Sans 3 for the subtitle (16px, #5A6170), level names (600, 15px, #1A1F2B), month labels (600, 14px), annotations (italic 14px, first line 600, second 400) and the source line (12px).

Layout:
- 56px margins. At the top left a strip of five 16 x 5 px blocks in the five level colors, with the eyebrow to its right. Title at y 94, subtitle at y 124.
- Left column (x 56 to about 200): per level, a 26 x 26 chip (rx 3) filled in the level color with its number centered (white on orange, red and black; ink on green and yellow; give the yellow chip a 1px #C9BF00 outline), then the level name 10px to the right.
- Plot from x 214 to 820, five equal bands from y 186 to 506, separated by 1.5px white lines. Level 1 at the bottom.
- Right column: a 1px #DADDE3 vertical rule at x 846 and the number of days at each level right-aligned at x 904 (a count of zero in #A3A8B2).
- Footer: 1px #DADDE3 rule at y 548, source line at y 572.

Axes and grid:
- No y axis numbers: the chips and names are the axis. A 1.2px ink baseline; month boundaries as 1px vertical ink lines at 18% opacity through the bands (the first at 60%), with month names 6px right of each tick below the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: a stepped line (horizontal then vertical, never diagonal) through the vertical center of each level band, 4px #1A1F2B with square caps and miter joins, drawn over an 8px white halo so it separates from the tints.
- Bar chart: one column per period, the full band height of its level drawn as a solid bar from the baseline up to the center of its level band, filled in that level's color at full strength with a 1px #1A1F2B top edge; keep the tinted bands behind. Bars about 70% of their slot, square corners.
- Annotations: a 2.5px ink dot at the event, a 0.9px ink leader line to a short two-line italic note ("4 Jan: High," / "snow on rain crust"). Place notes in empty upper bands, never across the step line.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, smoothing the steps, a legend box (the left column is the legend), extra colors beyond the five levels, and rounded corners except on the level chips.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the day counts sum to the total number of days, the title's count matches the Considerable-or-higher days, the yellow band is visible but not glaring, and no annotation overlaps the step line or another note.
