Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Cut List" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a joiner's shop notebook. Graphite pencil on off-white paper, typewritten labels, red-pencil margin notes and a cut-list card taped beside the chart. Handmade, but neat and legible.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #FAF7F0 for the canvas; the sidebar card is #FFFDF8 with a 1px #D9D2C2 edge.
- Graphite: #4A4A47 for the data line, markers, baseline and value labels. Title ink #2F2E2B.
- Pencil grid: #DAD6CD. Secondary text: #7D7A72.
- Red pencil: #B4412F for annotations, arrows, the card's header rule and tick marks on the card.
- Masking tape: #E8DDBC at 85% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Arvo 700 for the title (29px, #2F2E2B, stating the finding) and the card heading (15px uppercase, 1.2px letter-spacing).
- Special Elite for everything else: subtitle 15px #7D7A72; tick labels 12.5 to 13px #7D7A72; annotations 14px red pencil; value labels 14px graphite; card rows 13.5px graphite; card column heads 11px uppercase with 1px letter-spacing; footer 12 to 13px.

Layout:
- Title at x 54, baseline about y 70; subtitle about y 100; a slightly wavy 1px graphite pencil rule at 50% opacity under the subtitle.
- Chart on the left (plot about x 84 to 596, y 164 to 482). A cut-list card on the right (about 286 x 338 at x 632, y 150), rotated -1.2 degrees, with a soft drop shadow (dy 3, blur 3, #6B6252 at 22%) and a strip of tape (84 x 24, rotated 3 degrees) across its top edge.
- The card holds a heading, a one-line stock note, a 1px red-pencil rule, then a three-column table (part, quantity right-aligned, dimensions right-aligned) with 30px rows separated by 0.8px pencil-grid rules and small red check marks beside finished rows.
- A summary line and "Source: illustrative data" at the bottom left.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines at each y tick, 0.7px #DAD6CD; the zero line 1.2px graphite. Faint 0.5px vertical lines at each category. Unit label ("bd ft") above the y tick labels.
- Run the grid, the baseline and the data through a pencil filter: feTurbulence fractalNoise baseFrequency 0.8, 2 octaves, then feDisplacementMap scale 1.6, so strokes wobble slightly like pencil.
- An average reference line: 1px graphite dashed 5/5 at 60% opacity, labelled "avg 174" in 12.5px just above its left end.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2.4px graphite line at 90% opacity with straight segments, redrawn a second time at 1px and 40% opacity offset by (0.8, -0.6) for a double pencil stroke. Each point is marked by a slanted tally tick: a 1.8px graphite stroke from 4px left and 8px below the point to 4px right and 8px above it.
- Bar chart: bars drawn as pencil outlines (1.6px graphite, no fill) with light 45-degree hatching inside (0.8px graphite at 35%, 6px spacing), square corners, through the same pencil filter; value labels 14px graphite above each bar.
- Annotations: red-pencil notes in Special Elite 14px with small curved arrows (1.5px quadratic curve plus a two-stroke 9px arrowhead) pointing at the relevant point.

Avoid: pure white, solid color fills, smooth vector perfection, colored series beyond graphite and red pencil, and legends (label directly).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the tally ticks do not read as error bars, the arrows point exactly at their points, the card text stays inside the rotated card, and the pencil wobble is subtle rather than blurry.
