Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "CTD Profile" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure from an oceanographic cruise report. A crisp white page, boxed side-by-side panels, color-coded scales and nothing decorative: every mark is there because a scientist would read it.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Primary ink (title, plot frame, reference lines, big numbers): #1E2328. Secondary text: #5F666D. Gridlines and panel rules: #E4E7EA. Reference band fill: #F2F4F6.
- Series 1: #C23B2E (red). Series 2: #2A5DA8 (blue). Series 3: #3A8A4A (green). Each series' panel header, top axis line, ticks, tick labels and callouts use its own color.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Rosario everywhere, with lining figures (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums).
- Title 21px 700 #1E2328 stating the finding; subtitle 14px 400 #5F666D naming the measure, unit, place and sampling.
- Panel headers 13px 700 in the series color with the unit after a 6px gap at 11.5px 400; tick labels 12px 600 in series color; depth or category labels 12px 400 #5F666D; the rotated axis title 11px 700 uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing.
- Side panel: eyebrow 12px 700 uppercase, 1.8px letter-spacing; series names 14px 700 in color; key values 22px 600 #1E2328 with 12px #5F666D captions.

Layout:
- 56px left margin. Title at y 50, subtitle at y 76.
- The plot area runs from x 128 to 660, y 170 to 548. For several measures it is split into side-by-side panels (three panels 14px apart), each a box with a 1px #1E2328 frame. The right side from x 684 holds a station or metadata card, separated by a 1px #E4E7EA vertical rule.
- Source line at bottom left, 12px #5F666D.

Axes and grid:
- Line chart: the shared dimension (depth, or time for an ordinary line chart) runs down the left side of the first panel, increasing downward, labeled every 200 units, with a rotated uppercase axis title; every panel shares exactly that vertical scale. Each measure gets its own panel (series 1, 2, 3 from left to right) with exactly one horizontal scale along the panel's top edge: a 1.5px colored line over the frame, three 5px upward ticks at round values, colored labels 9px above, and the panel header 34px above the frame at the panel's left edge. Never stack several scales over one plot; if my chart has only one measure, use one full-width panel with a single top axis in #1E2328.
- Gridlines: 1px #E4E7EA horizontal lines at each labeled depth inside every panel, no vertical gridlines.
- Bar chart: horizontal bars down the same left axis (categories or depth bins top to bottom), one top value axis in #1E2328 with ticks at round values, bars starting at zero.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2.2px lines with round joins, drawn from dense samples so they keep a slight instrument jitter; no dots. Mark extremes with an open 5px-radius circle (1.6px stroke in the series color) and a 1px leader to a two-line label (700 name, 400 value), leading toward the open side of its own panel.
- Bar chart: flat bars 60% of the band in series color, square corners, value label 12px 600 in the series color just past the bar end. For grouped bars use the three series colors in order.
- A reference level (like a mixed layer depth or a threshold) is a 1.2px #1E2328 dashed line (6 on, 4 off) across every panel, labeled once (12px 700) just below its left end in the first panel; the band above it is filled #F2F4F6 in every panel.

Labels and annotation:
- Side card: an uppercase eyebrow naming the station, two lines of metadata, then one block per series with a 26px, 3px-thick colored line swatch, the series name and two key values with captions (for example surface and at 1,000 m, or max and min with their depths), blocks separated by 1px #E4E7EA rules.

Avoid: several scales stacked over one plot, filled areas under profiles, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, a legend box (the card is the legend), smoothing the profiles into perfect curves, and more than three colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each panel has exactly one scale in its own color, all panels share the same depth positions, depth increases downward, the reference line label clears every line, and the values in the side card match the data.
