Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Crayon Box" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a kid's school project. Everything is colored in with waxy crayons on manila construction paper, with a smiling sun and doodled stars.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: Manila #F1DDA4, with horizontal paper fibers (feTurbulence fractalNoise, baseFrequency 0.012 horizontally and 0.5 vertically, 3 octaves, tinted brown, 50% opacity).
- Crayons, in series or category order: Red #E0342B, Purple #7E4DBA, Orange #F27F1B, Blue #2A6BD6, Green #2E9E4F. Sun Yellow #F9C414 for doodles only (too light for data on manila).
- Dark crayon #2B2622 for the title, axes, ground line and category labels. Subtitle #5A4A3A, source line #7A6448.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Title: Sniglet 800, 46px, dark crayon. Value labels: Sniglet 800, 34px, in each bar's own crayon color.
- Everything else: Gaegu 700. Subtitle 26px, category labels 27px, axis numbers 24px, source line 19px uppercase with 1px letter-spacing.

Wax texture (this is what sells the style):
- Put every crayon mark (bars, axes, doodles) through a filter that masks it with paper tooth: feTurbulence fractalNoise baseFrequency "0.95 0.38", 2 octaves, alpha mapped to 4.2*a - 1.25, composited "in" with the marks so the wax skips in little streaks, then a gentle displacement (fractalNoise 0.5, scale 2.5) to roughen edges.
- Run the title and subtitle through a lighter version (baseFrequency "0.9 0.4", alpha 3*a - 0.2) so the lettering looks pressed hard but stays readable.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines. A hand-drawn dark y axis (4px, jittered) with short 3.5px tick strokes and numbers every 2 units. A wiggly ground line under the bars: 4.5px dark crayon following a sine wave (amplitude 3px, wavelength about 107px) with a little random jitter, running past both ends of the plot.

Marks:
- Bar chart: color each bar in like a kid would: a back-and-forth scribble of 8px round-capped strokes at 90% opacity crossing the bar on a steep diagonal (each stroke rises about 26px across the bar, successive strokes about 6px apart), then a lighter second pass (6px, 50% opacity, 9px apart, 18px rise) to fill most gaps. Outline each bar with a 4.5px jittered stroke in the same crayon. Bars about 67% of the band width. Value above each bar, category name below.
- Line chart: a 7px crayon line with round caps, jittered by about 2px, with scribbled 10px dots at each point, and the area underneath colored in with the same diagonal scribble at 35% opacity. Label each line at its end in its own crayon color.

Doodles:
- A smiling sun in the top right corner: seven concentric jittered Sun Yellow rings (6px strokes) for the face, ten Orange rays, dot eyes and a curved smile in dark crayon.
- A yellow crown with orange outline above the winning value and four or five outlined stars (4px, jittered) in the crayon colors in empty space. Keep doodles away from labels.

Avoid: clean vector fills, gradients, gridlines, thin strokes under 3px, yellow data on manila, serif or geometric fonts, and anything that looks printed.

When you're done, render the chart and zoom in: the manila should show through gaps in the wax, the scribble should read as hand coloring, each value label should be legible in its bar's color, and no doodle should overlap text.
