Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Crash-Free" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a release-health console for an engineering team. Monochrome and exacting, like instrument readouts, where one alarm red instantly marks the thing that went wrong.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #151515 (carbon).
- Data line and normal markers: #D4D4D4 (light gray). The single regressed point, its adjoining segments, stem, category label and callout: #EF4444 (alarm red). Red is used nowhere else except a tiny 8px square before the eyebrow.
- Title #F2F2F2; secondary text #9A9A9A; captions #5E5E5E; gridlines #262626; stems #3A3A3A; baseline #4A4A4A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Archivo for the title (700, 27px, -0.4px letter-spacing, stating the finding), the subtitle (400, 15px, #9A9A9A) and the callout's headline (700, 17px).
- Share Tech Mono for everything else: eyebrow 12.5px uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing; axis labels 12px; point value labels 11.5px; category labels 12.5px; callout eyebrow 12px uppercase with 1px letter-spacing; source 11.5px.

Layout:
- 40px margins. Eyebrow at y 48, title at y 88, subtitle at y 114.
- Plot from x 104 to 860, baseline at y 510, top at y 190, extending gridlines 24px past each side.

Axes and grid:
- Truncated y axis (for example 97 to 100%): solid 1px #262626 gridlines on whole numbers, dotted (1 3) on halves; labels right-aligned 36px left of the plot with one decimal. Draw a small zigzag break (1.2px #9A9A9A) at the left end of the baseline and say "Axis truncated at 97%" in the source line.
- A target or threshold line: 1px #9A9A9A dashed 6 4, labeled "TARGET 99.5%" right-aligned just below it on a background-colored patch.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 1.5px #D4D4D4 line with straight segments; hollow markers (r 3.5, 1.5px stroke, background fill) with two-decimal value labels 14px above; the latest value label in #F2F2F2. Every point drops a 1px #3A3A3A hairline stem to the baseline.
- Regression: the offending point is a solid red dot (r 5) with a red 18% halo (r 10), no value label; the segments into and out of it and its stem turn red.
- Callout: a dashed red hairline runs right from the red point to a 1.2px red square bracket that spans from the target line down to the point, a short tick from the bracket's middle leads to a 236 x 92 square-cornered box (background fill, 1.2px red stroke) holding "1.64 PTS BELOW TARGET", the culprit's name in Archivo 700, and a mono note. Keep it clear of the line.
- Bar chart: thin 10px #D4D4D4 bars rising from the truncated baseline (keep the zigzag), the regressed bar solid red with the same bracket callout, value labels in mono above each bar.

Avoid: any color other than grays and the one red, gradients, glows beyond the red halo, rounded card corners, and hiding the axis truncation.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the bracket's gap equals target minus the regressed value, only one mark is red, the truncation is disclosed, and no value label touches a stem, the target label or the callout.
