Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Control Chart" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a statistical process control sheet pinned beside a production line. Plain, exact and trustworthy: a white form with a thin gray frame, a header block of form fields, pale zone bands and red limits that make any out-of-control point impossible to miss.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Sheet: #FFFFFF for the whole canvas, framed by a 1px #9AA0A6 rectangle inset 24px from every edge.
- Primary series: #1B3A6B (dark blue).
- Limits and exceptions: #C62828 (red) for control limit lines, their labels, out-of-control rings and callout headings.
- Zone bands: #ECEEF0 (zone A, 2 to 3 sigma), #F3F4F5 (zone B, 1 to 2 sigma), #F9FAFA (zone C, within 1 sigma). Zone boundaries: 0.8px #DADCE0.
- Ink #202124 for titles and the center line; secondary text #5F6368; frames, ticks and zone letters #9AA0A6.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Arimo throughout. Title 700 26px #202124, stating the finding. Subtitle 400 15px #5F6368 with the measure, subgroup size and unit.
- Form field keys 700 10px uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing in #5F6368; field values 400 14px #202124.
- Axis labels 12px #5F6368; limit labels 700 12px key ("UCL", "CL", "LCL") over a 12px value line; callout heading 700 13px red with a 12px #5F6368 second line; legend 12px; source 11px.

Layout:
- 48px inner margin. Title at the top, subtitle under it, then a form header block: one 48px-tall row of 5 equal cells in a 1px #9AA0A6 box with 1px dividers (for example Plant, Line, Characteristic, Subgroup, Limits), each with a small key above its value.
- The plot sits in its own 1px #9AA0A6 frame below the header, from x 88 to 820, leaving about 110px on the right for the limit labels.
- A single legend row along the bottom (subgroup mean, control limit, out of control, zones) with "Source: ..." right-aligned on the same baseline.

Axes and grid:
- No ordinary gridlines: the zone bands are the grid. Fill the zones full-width inside the plot frame, symmetric around the center line.
- Y ticks every 1 unit as 5px outward ticks with one-decimal labels. X ticks at every subgroup, labeled at 1 and every 5th, plus a centered axis title naming the subgroup sequence and time span.
- Pad the y domain so the most extreme point and its callout sit inside the frame (about 4.8 sigma below and 5 sigma above the center).
- Zone letters A, B, C, C, B, A in 700 11px #9AA0A6, right-aligned 8px inside the plot's right edge, vertically centered in each band. Leave about 34px between the last point and the right edge so the letters stay clear.

Marks:
- Line chart: straight 1.8px #1B3A6B segments (round joins) with a point at every subgroup: white-filled circles r 3.2 with a 1.6px dark blue stroke. The center line is a solid 1.2px #202124 rule; UCL and LCL are 1.5px #C62828 dashed rules (7 on, 4 off). Out-of-control points get a solid red dot (r 3.6) inside a 2px red ring (r 9), plus a two-line callout ("#17: 502.18 g" and a short cause) placed away from the line, left-anchored above the upper breach and right-anchored below the lower one.
- Bar chart: treat it as a run of measurements. Slim #1B3A6B bars (about 55% of the band, square corners) over the same zone bands, with the center line and dashed red limits drawn on top. A bar beyond a limit is filled #C62828 with a red ring marker at its tip and the same two-line callout.
- Label the center and limits at the right edge, outside the plot: "UCL" / "CL" / "LCL" with the value and unit beneath, in red for limits and ink for the center line.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, rounded corners, colored zone bands, smoothing the line, extra accent colors, and gridlines on top of the zones.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every point beyond a limit (and only those) is ringed in red, the title's count of breaches matches the data, zone letters don't touch any point, and the callouts sit fully inside the plot frame.
