Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Contrast Mode" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an operating system's high-contrast accessibility theme. Pure white, pure black, heavy type and thick outlines; nothing depends on color alone, and keyboard focus is visible from across the room.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #FFFFFF. All text, outlines, gridlines and patterns: #000000.
- Deep blue: #0033CC for the first series' solid fill and one small status label.
- Focus yellow: #FFD400, used only for the focus ring and the tooltip heading. Never as a data fill.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Atkinson Hyperlegible everywhere, mostly 700. No text smaller than 16px: title 32px 700; subtitle 18px 400; key 17px 700; axis labels and bar value labels 16px 700; category labels 19px 700; source 16px 400.

Layout:
- 48px left margin. Title, subtitle, then a key row: for each series a 21 x 21 swatch with a 3px black outline showing its fill, followed by "N = Northgate" style text (a single letter code plus the name).
- Plot from x 104 to 912, baseline around y 452; footer 28px from the bottom with the source at left and a blue "Focus: 1 of 18 bars" status at right.

Axes and grid:
- A 3px solid black baseline. Gridlines 1px black dashed (3 on, 5 off). Y labels 16px 700 black, right-aligned 14px left of the plot.

Marks:
- Bar chart: grouped vertical bars, 34px wide with 10px gaps inside a group, every bar outlined with a 3px black stroke (drawn inside the bar edge). Each series has its own fill so color is never the only cue: series 1 solid #0033CC, series 2 white with black diagonal hatch (45 degrees, 3.5px lines every 9px), series 3 white with black dots (r 1.9 on an 8px grid). A value label 16px 700 above every bar, and the series letter code under every bar, with the category label below that. No legend box.
- Line chart: 4px black lines with a distinct marker per series (filled blue square, white circle with 3px black outline, black triangle) and a distinct dash per series (solid, 10 6, 3 5). Direct label at the end of each line with name and value in 16px 700. No legend box.
- Focus state on one selected mark: a 4px #FFD400 ring 4px outside the bar (2px radius) wrapped by a 3px black ring 7.5px outside (4px radius), so it reads on any background. Lift that bar's value label above the ring.
- Keyboard tooltip: a black box (6px radius, about 262 x 92) with a small pointer toward the focused bar. Heading in 17px 700 #FFD400 ("Saturday, Northgate"), value in 20px 700 white, then key caps (black 26 x 22 boxes, 4px radius, 1.5px white outline, 13px 700 glyphs) for arrow keys and Tab, each followed by a 16px white hint ("move", "series").

Avoid: pastel or mid-grey text, thin strokes under 1px, color-only encoding, legends separate from the marks, gradients, shadows, transparency, text under 16px.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every text element is at least 16px, every series is distinguishable in pure black and white, the focus ring does not touch neighbouring labels, and the tooltip covers no bar or value label.
