Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Color Field" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: large, quiet color-field paintings hung in a dim gallery. Wide slabs of thinly painted pigment with soft edges, lots of empty wall, and a small museum wall label instead of a headline.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #1E1512 (very dark warm brown) for the canvas.
- Pigments, cycled across bars (decorative, not data): #A67C35 ochre, #6E1F24 deep maroon, #B9582A burnt orange, #5B2C4A plum.
- Inner glow per pigment: #C9A060 for ochre, #94373A for maroon, #D9824F for orange, #7F4868 for plum.
- Text and baseline: #F3E9DF (warm white); secondary text: #A8988A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Newsreader italic 400 for the title (17px warm white, sentence case, stating the finding), the subtitle (12.5px #A8988A) and category labels (12px #A8988A).
- Newsreader 500 upright at 12px warm white for the value numbers, and 400 at 11px for the source line.

Layout:
- Generous empty margins: the plot runs about x 150 to 810, with bars rising from a baseline at y 420 and the tallest bar topping out around y 100.
- The title block sits small at the bottom left like a wall label: a 24 x 1 px #A8988A rule at x 72, y 494, then the title, subtitle and source in three short lines.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis, no gridlines, no ticks. A single 0.8px warm white baseline extending 12px past the outer bars.
- Beneath each bar, the category in italic and the value in small upright numbers underneath it.

Effects:
- Feathered edges: fill each bar, then displace it with fractal noise (baseFrequency 0.035 x 0.09, 3 octaves, displacement scale 5) and blur 3.2px, so edges look like pigment soaking into canvas.
- Uneven tops: jitter the top edge at five points by up to plus or minus 2.5px.
- Inner glow: a rectangle inset 14px from the sides and 16px from the top, filled with the matching glow color at 55% opacity and blurred 9px.
- Canvas grain: fractal noise stretched vertically (baseFrequency 0.6 x 0.02, 2 octaves) in warm white at 7% alpha, clipped to each bar.
- Use a filter region covering the whole chart so the blurs are never cropped.

Marks:
- Bar chart: wide bars (about 74px on a 94px slot) with no outlines, colored by cycling the four pigments.
- Line chart: a broad 14px feathered band in burnt orange (same displacement and blur) with a 3px inner glow line in #D9824F along its center, over an ochre area fill at 25% opacity feathered the same way; no markers, values in tiny type beneath the baseline at each labeled period.

Avoid: hard edges, bright saturated colors, bold or large headlines, legends, gridlines, and tight margins.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the edges look soft but the bar heights still read accurately, the blur is not clipped anywhere, every value label sits clearly under its bar, and the wall label stays small and quiet.
