Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Clock Burn

  • Pale red clock#FF8C8C
  • Plate gray#161616

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Clock Burn" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a live broadcast overlay for a classical chess game: black screen, monospaced figures, two player colors and scoreboard plates. Tense and technical.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #0D0D0D. Plates: #161616.
- Series: #FFFFFF (first player) and #FF8C8C (pale red, second player). Live dot: #FF3B3B.
- Secondary text: #8C8C8C. Gridlines: #262626.

Typography (Google Fonts): JetBrains Mono everywhere.
- Status line 11px 500 uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing in #8C8C8C after a 5px-radius red live dot.
- Title 22 to 23px 700 #FFFFFF with -0.6px letter-spacing (sentence case, stating the finding, numbers computed from the data); subtitle 12.5px #8C8C8C. Any time quoted in prose (subtitle, callouts) uses spelled-out units ("2 min 54 s", "42 S LEFT"), never an h:mm-looking figure that could be misread against the axis.
- Plate labels 11px 700 uppercase (#8C8C8C), names 13px 700 in the series color, big values 17px 800 in the series color, right-aligned.
- Axis labels 11px #8C8C8C (times as h:mm); annotation labels 11px 700 in the series color with a 10px uppercase second line in #8C8C8C.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Status line at y 46, title at y 88, subtitle at y 114.
- Two plates (272 x 40, x 56 and 340, y 138) with a 4px color bar on the left edge: side label, name, and the final value. They serve as the legend. A small two-line caption to their right.
- Plot from y 214 to 506, x from 78 to 896. Source at y 574 in 10.5px.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines 0.8px #262626 (1.2px at zero), y labels right-aligned. X labels for a handful of steps, centered on their columns; a small "MOVE" (or unit) caption under the right end.
- A dashed (3 on 3) 1px #8C8C8C vertical line at any rule change, with a two-line label near the top ("+30 MIN" / "TIME CONTROL").

Marks:
- Line chart: stepped lines, 2px, miter joins. At each step the line drops vertically, runs 3px, then rises by the small increment, so every step shows a tiny uptick notch. Draw the second series first, then the first.
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars 70% of the band, paired by category in the two series colors (white and pale red), value labels 11px above in the series color.
- Outliers (for clocks: moves longer than ten minutes): full-height column bands one step wide filled with the series color at 13% opacity, with a 2px solid cap in the series color at the top, labeled to the right in two lines. Stagger alternating labels 32px apart vertically.
- Critical low point: an open 4px circle (1.4px stroke) in the series color with a label such as "42 S LEFT" in 11px 700 placed above-left.

Avoid: glow effects, gradients, rounded corners, proportional fonts and more than two series colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the upticks are visible at full size, the band labels don't collide, and every number in the title and plates matches the data.
