Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Chancery" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a printed programme for a candlelit evening concert. Midnight indigo, gold ink and parchment, with lines drawn as if by a broad-edged pen held at a fixed angle. Hushed, elegant and symmetrical.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #16193A midnight indigo.
- Main series, title, ornamental rules and colophon: #D8B45C gold.
- Secondary series, subtitle and month labels: #E8DFC8 parchment (the secondary line at 85% opacity).
- Gridlines: #2C3163. Axis figures, source and colophon text: #A9A6B8.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Tangerine 700 for the title: 60px, #D8B45C, centered, stating the finding.
- Cormorant Infant for everything else: subtitle 17px italic #E8DFC8 centered; month labels 18px italic #E8DFC8; axis figures 16px weight 500 #A9A6B8; direct series labels 17px italic 600 in the series color; annotations 16px italic in gold; source 15px italic; colophon text 14px with 1.5px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- Title baseline y 80, centered. A gold rule under it at y 104 from x 250 to 710: a 1px line with 4.5px diamond terminals at each end and a 6px diamond in the center on a small indigo knock-out.
- Subtitle baseline y 136. Plot area x 104 to 846, y 196 to 486. Month labels 28px below the baseline.
- Footer: a second gold rule with diamond terminals at y 540 across the plot width, "Source: illustrative data" left at y 570, and a colophon at the lower right: a 6px gold diamond ringed by four r 1.8 gold dots, preceded by a short name and year in small spaced type.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 0.8px #2C3163 (the baseline 1.2px). Y figures 16px left of the plot. No y-axis line.
- Month labels in italic at the first point of each month, with 6px #A9A6B8 ticks below the baseline.
- A reference line (for example capacity) as a 0.8px #E8DFC8 dotted line (2 on, 4 off) at 60% opacity, with a small italic label.

Marks:
- Line chart: smooth each series with a monotone cubic, sample it densely, then sweep a fixed nib segment along it: at every step draw the quad between consecutive samples offset by plus and minus half the nib vector, where the nib points 30 degrees above horizontal (up and to the right). Wind every quad the same way so they union into one stroke. The result is thick on flat and falling stretches and hairline where the line rises at 30 degrees. Main series nib 12px in #D8B45C plus a 1.2px gold hairline along the path; secondary nib 6.5px in #E8DFC8 at 85% opacity plus a 0.8px hairline. Mark only the key points, with gold diamonds (5 to 6px).
- Bar chart: bars drawn with the same broad nib: each bar outline swept by a 30-degree nib so its verticals are thick and its top is thin, filled with #D8B45C at 18% opacity; the highlighted bar solid #D8B45C. Values in Cormorant Infant italic above each bar.

Labels and annotation:
- Label series directly at the line ends in italic ("This season", "Last season"). Annotate the key point with two centered italic lines in gold above it.

Avoid: sans-serif type, uniform-width lines, glows and gradients (they band on this dark ground), bright white, legends and heavy gridlines.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the line weight visibly changes with direction like a broad pen, the Tangerine title is large enough to read at thumbnail size, and the two series remain distinguishable by weight and label, not just by color.
