Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Chain Ladder" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a clean actuarial reserve review on bright white paper. Warm, scholarly and precise: a fan of development curves in a single wheat-to-ochre ramp, with the projected part honestly dashed and boxed in by a soft gray band.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Series ramp: interpolate in RGB from #E9D8A6 (pale wheat, oldest series) to #9A5B13 (deep ochre, newest series) evenly across all series.
- Text and axis baseline: #2B2620. Secondary text: #756C60. Gridlines: #ECE8E1.
- Projection band: #8C8578 at 13% opacity; its lower edge a 1px #8C8578 dotted line (2 on, 3 off). Band label text #6F685C.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Spectral 600 for the title (30px, #2B2620, stating the finding) and for the big bracket value (20px, ochre). Spectral italic 12.5px for the exhibit number at bottom right.
- Karla for everything else: eyebrow 11.5px 700 uppercase with 2.2px letter-spacing in #9A5B13; subtitle 14.5px #756C60; tick labels 12px; axis title 12px 500; series end labels 10.5px 700 uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing (small-caps feel), colored with the series ramp but starting from #B39458 so the palest stays readable; source 11.5px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow at y 54, title at y 94, a 180px long 1.5px #9A5B13 rule under the title at y 112, subtitle at y 136.
- Plot from x 88 to 736, y 170 to 500. Series labels in a column 10px right of the plot end; a reserve bracket column around x 812 to 904.
- A thin #ECE8E1 footer rule at y 552 with the source note left and the exhibit number right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #ECE8E1 gridlines, the top one labeled with the unit ("$80M"), others bare numbers, right-aligned 12px left of the plot. A 1px #2B2620 baseline with 5px ticks every 8 periods, labels 22px below, axis title right-aligned under the axis.

Marks:
- Line chart: every series starts at the origin and fans out. Actual values as 2.2px smooth (monotone) lines; the projected continuation as 1.6px dashed lines (4 on, 3 off) in the same color. A 2.6px dot marks each series' last actual value; the dotted diagonal connecting those dots is the band's lower edge. The gray projection band spans from that diagonal up to the highest projected curve. Label each line at its right end ("AY 2025"), nudging labels at least 12.5px apart.
- Bar chart: stacked vertical bars per series, the paid portion solid in the series ramp color and the projected remainder as a hollow bar with a 1.2px dashed outline in the same color over a #8C8578 13% fill, square corners, labels above in Karla 700.

Labels and annotation:
- A reserve bracket for the newest series: a 1.3px ochre square bracket spanning from its latest actual value to its projected ultimate, with a faint dotted ochre leader (60% opacity) from the last actual point, the gap value in 20px Spectral ochre, then "AY 2025" in 11px 700 and "reserve gap" in 11px muted.
- A band callout above the curves: an elbow leader 0.8px #6F685C, "IBNR" 13px 700 with 3px letter-spacing, and a short explanation in 11.5px.

Avoid: multiple hues, a legend box, markers on every point, gridlines on x, heavy fills, and dark backgrounds.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the ramp runs light-to-dark oldest-to-newest, every dashed tail starts exactly where its solid line ends, labels don't collide, and the bracket value equals ultimate minus latest actual.
