Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Cellar Book" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a private cellar book kept by hand. Laid paper, one sepia ink, hatching instead of color, and the owner's handwritten notes in a second ink beside the bars. Old-fashioned but orderly.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #F3EBD9 (laid paper). Laid lines: a pattern of 1px horizontal lines every 4px in #E2D5BA at 45% opacity; chain lines: vertical 1.4px #E2D5BA lines every 26px at 80% opacity. A radial vignette darkens the edges with #5A3B22 at 12% opacity from 60% of the radius outward.
- Ink for all marks, outlines, hatching, title and labels: #5A3B22 (sepia). Secondary text (running head, subtitle, axis numbers, source): #8A6A4C (faded ink).
- Handwritten notes and their arrows: #3F4F6B (blue-black note ink). No other colors.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IM Fell English: running head italic 18px faded ink; title 400 at 38px in sepia stating the finding; subtitle italic 18px faded ink; axis numbers 17px; value totals 17px sepia above each bar; category labels 18px (years as '06, '07 ...); legend italic 16px; source and folio italic 15px.
- Caveat for handwriting: the main note 700 at 30px rotated -4 degrees, secondary note lines 400 at 18 to 21px.

Layout:
- 64px side margins. Running head at y 78, title at y 124, subtitle at y 154, then a double rule (two 0.8px sepia lines 4px apart at 70% opacity) across the width at y 170.
- Legend in one row at the top right under the rule: 18 x 14 swatches filled with each hatch and outlined 1.1px sepia, names in italic beside them.
- Footer: "Source: ..." at bottom left and a folio ("folio 12") at bottom right, both italic.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis line. Gridlines every 10 units as 0.5px sepia dotted lines (2 on, 5 off) at 50% opacity; y numbers right-aligned 14px left of the plot.
- A 1.8px sepia baseline.

Marks:
- Bar chart: stacked vertical bars 32px wide, each segment first filled with the paper color, then with a hatch pattern and a 1.3px sepia outline. Series 1: 1.6px lines every 6px rotated 45 degrees (dense diagonal). Series 2: 0.9px lines every 7px rotated -35 degrees (light opposite diagonal). Series 3: a 6px square cross-hatch of 0.7px lines. Put the bar total above each bar. Bars and baseline pass through a gentle wobble filter (feTurbulence fractalNoise, baseFrequency 0.035, 2 octaves, feDisplacementMap scale 2.2, filter region the full canvas) so edges look inked by hand.
- Line chart: sepia 2px lines with the same wobble filter, each series told apart by dash pattern (solid, long dash, dotted) rather than color, with small open circle markers (r 3, 1.3px sepia) and the areas between them optionally hatched with the same patterns at low density.

Labels and annotation:
- A handwritten "drink soon!" in note ink over the oldest categories, with a smaller explanatory line below it and a 1.6px round-capped bracket with rounded corners spanning those bars.
- A second two-line handwritten note beside the tallest bar with a curved 1.5px arrow and an open chevron head pointing at its top.

Avoid: color fills, gradients on the marks, crisp digital-looking outlines without the wobble, modern sans fonts, heavy gridlines, and more than two handwritten notes.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the three hatches are distinguishable at thumbnail size, handwriting never overlaps bars or totals, the chain and laid lines stay faint, and the note's arithmetic matches the data.
