Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Catalogue Plate" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a numbered checklist page from a scholarly exhibition catalogue printed on heavy matte cream stock. Quiet, precise and bookish, with italic serif titles, tiny tracked capitals and hairline rules.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #EFE9DC (cream stock). A faint 1px #E2DBCB plate mark inset 24 to 28px from the edges.
- Ink: #1C1B19 for titles, work titles and the heavier 0.8px rules.
- Primary marks: #4C6582 (quiet slate blue), for the items that meet the highlighted condition and for the threshold line and its note.
- Other marks: #B3AC9E (pale stone gray). Secondary text: #756F65. Hairline row rules and dotted gridlines: #D6CFC0.

Typography (Google Fonts), lining figures on the serif (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums):
- Cormorant Garamond: plate caption "Plate XIV" in italic 500 at 40px; the title in 600 at 28px stating the finding; item names in italic 500 at 17px; value labels in 600 at 15px (700 slate for highlighted items); footnotes in italic at 14px.
- Work Sans 500 for small capitals, set as uppercase with letter-spacing of 16% of the font size: 10 to 10.5px for the subtitle and tour line, 9 to 9.5px for column headings, axis values and maker/date columns; catalogue numbers "cat. 01" in regular 11px with 0.8px letter-spacing, lowercase.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Top left: "Plate XIV" in large italic, followed on the same baseline region by a 0.6px ink rule running to the right margin, with the exhibition name in small caps right-aligned beneath it.
- Title, then a small-caps subtitle naming the measure and unit.
- A checklist table: columns CAT. / WORK / ARTIST, DATE (right-aligned) / the chart, with small-caps headings above a 0.8px ink rule. Rows are about 31px tall with a 0.6px #D6CFC0 hairline between rows and a 0.8px ink rule under the last row.
- Centered two-line italic footnote below the table (dimensions and lender credits) and a centered small-caps "SOURCE: ILLUSTRATIVE DATA" line at the foot.

Axes and grid:
- Axis values in small caps along the top of the chart column only, with 0.6px dotted (1 on, 3 off) #D6CFC0 verticals running down through the rows. No y-axis line; the rows are the categories.
- Any threshold is a 0.8px slate dashed (3 3) vertical with a short italic serif note in slate placed in empty space beside it.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal lollipops, one per row, starting at the left of the chart column. Highlighted rows: 1.6px slate stem and r 5.5 slate dot; others: 1.2px stone stem and r 4.5 stone dot. Value label 12px right of the dot in Cormorant with a 5px cream halo (paint-order stroke) so rules never cut it.
- Line chart: a 1.6px slate line with small r 3.5 slate dots at each point and short italic serif labels at the line ends; secondary series in stone at 1.2px. Keep the same top axis, dotted verticals, row-like horizontal hairlines and numbered caption table beneath if categories need listing.

Avoid: bold sans titles, saturated colors, fills behind the table, rounded boxes, legends (label directly), shadows and gradients.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every row has a catalogue number, the count in the title matches the highlighted rows, no value label is crossed by the threshold or a rule, and the page still reads like a printed catalogue at thumbnail size.
