Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Carved Slate" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a memorial tablet cut in blue-gray slate. Inscriptional capitals, marks chiseled into the stone with V-section faces, one restrained touch of gold leaf. Solemn, permanent and exact.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Slate: #2F3740 for the whole canvas.
- Cut light: #C7CDD3, the pale face of cut letters, highlight lips and small labels.
- Shadow: #1B2026, the shadowed walls of every cut.
- Lit wall: #4E5863, the lit right-hand wall of V-cut bars. Top wall: #232A31.
- Gold leaf: #B89A5A, only on the one highlighted series and the small diamond fleuron. Gilded faces: left #6F5B31, top #86703F, right #B89A5A, lip #E9D6A2; gilded labels #D9BF84.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Marcellus SC for inscriptional capitals: title 29px with 3.2px letter-spacing, centered, stating the finding; Roman numeral years 22px with 3px letter-spacing; category labels 12px with 0.6px letter-spacing at 85%.
- Cormorant with lining figures for small figures: subtitle 19px italic centered at 80% opacity, value labels 16px 700 (19px on gilded marks), colophon 15px italic at 75%.
- Write years as Roman numerals (MMXXII, MMXXIII...).

Texture:
- Cleft texture over the whole slab: feTurbulence fractalNoise baseFrequency "0.006 0.03", 4 octaves, recolored to #C7CDD3-ish with alpha = 0.6 x noise - 0.26, so pale streaks run horizontally and stay subtle.
- About 14 fine cleavage lines: 0.8px #1B2026 at 50% with a 0.5px #C7CDD3 line at 12% just below.

Layout:
- Carved single-line border inset 26px left and right and 24px top and bottom: a 2.4px #1B2026 line with a 0.8px #C7CDD3 line at 45% inside it, 1.2px in.
- Title centered at y 82, subtitle at 112, then a centered rule pair (134px each side, carved like the border) with a small gold diamond between them.
- Plot from x 96 to 864, baseline y 436, top of scale y 186. Category labels 20px below the baseline, Roman numeral group labels 54px below. Colophon centered at y 546.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines and no gridlines: every mark carries its value, cut 10px above it.
- Carved baseline: a 2px #1B2026 line with a 0.8px #C7CDD3 line at 50% 1.4px below.

Marks:
- Inscribed lettering: draw every inscription twice, a #1B2026 copy 1.1px higher and the #C7CDD3 copy on top, so each stroke has a shadowed upper wall.
- Bar chart (grouped): 32px bars with 9px gaps, groups centered in their slots. Each bar is a V-section cut: a left wall trapezoid from the left edge to the centerline in #1B2026, a right wall in #4E5863, a top triangle from the two top corners down to the centerline (depth = half the width) in #232A31, a 0.6px black valley line at 35% down the centerline, a 1.2px lip of #C7CDD3 at 80% along the top edge and a 0.8px lip at 35% down the right edge. Gild the tallest or most important series with the gold faces.
- Line chart: cut the line as a V-groove: a 7px #1B2026 stroke with a 3px #4E5863 stroke offset 1.5px down and right and a 1px #C7CDD3 lip along its lower edge; markers as small cut squares (10px) with the same four-face treatment. Gild the highlighted series.

Avoid: glossy or metallic gradients (the gold is flat faces), drop shadows below marks, sans-serif type, Arabic numerals for years, more than one gilded series, and a texture strong enough to look like water.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the bars read as cut into the stone rather than raised, the gold appears only on the highlighted series, the Roman numerals are correct, the inscribed text stays crisp at thumbnail size, and the percentage in the title matches the data.
