Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Carloads Weekly" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a railroad's printed weekly traffic report, set like a timetable sheet. Weathered cream paper, heavy black rules, a boxed division name, plain condensed figures and thin working lines. Sober, dense and trustworthy.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F4EFE3 (weathered cream) for the whole canvas.
- Ink, rules and axis: #111111.
- Series, in order: #8B2E1F (boxcar red), #C9A227 (grain gold), #2B2B2B (coal black). For gold text on cream use the darker #8A6D12 so it stays readable.
- Secondary text: #5E574B. Gridlines and table row rules: #D8D0BE.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Roboto Slab 700 for the title (30px, #111111, sentence case, stating the finding) and for the big figures in the side table (22px).
- Roboto Condensed for everything else: header labels 13 to 14px, 500 or 700, uppercase with 1.6 to 2.4px letter-spacing; subtitle 16px 400 #5E574B; axis labels 13px; series names 13px 700 uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing in the series color; notes 12 to 12.5px.

Layout:
- 40px side margins. A 5px #111111 rule across the top at y 30.
- Header row: the division name in a box (2px #111111 stroke, no fill, about 196 x 30px, text 14px 700 with 2.4px letter-spacing, centered), then the railroad name in 13px 500 #5E574B, and the report name and number right-aligned in 13px 700.
- A 1.5px rule under the header, the title and subtitle, then a double rule (two 1px lines 3px apart) above the chart.
- The plot takes the left 75% of the width. To its right, separated by a 1.5px vertical #111111 rule, a timetable-style side table: column heads "WEEK 52" and "VS 2024" in 12px 700 over a 1px rule, then one row per series sorted by latest value (a 14 x 3px color swatch plus the series name, the latest value in Roboto Slab 22px 700, and the change vs last year right-aligned in 15px #5E574B), each row closed by a 0.8px #D8D0BE rule. A small key at the bottom of the table explains solid = this year and dotted = same week last year.
- Footer: a 5px #111111 rule, "Source: ..." on the left, a small uppercase note on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #D8D0BE gridlines at round values; the zero line is a 2px #111111 rule.
- Y labels 13px #5E574B, right-aligned 10px left of the plot, with thousands separators. No y-axis line.
- X ticks 6px long, 1.5px black, labelled "WK 1", "WK 10" and so on in 13px 500 with 1px letter-spacing.

Marks:
- Line chart: this year's series as thin 1.8px straight-segment lines with round joins and a 3px dot at the last point. The same week last year as faint dotted lines in the same color: 1.4px, dasharray 0.5 3.5, round caps, 60% opacity, drawn underneath.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered columns in the series colors, grouped by week or period, with last year as an outlined column (1.2px dotted stroke, no fill) behind each current column. Same rules, side table and footer.

Labels and annotation:
- Mark the disruption week with a 1.5px vertical #111111 line and a 10px wide 7% black band behind it, plus a timetable notice box (1.5px black stroke, cream fill) holding "WK 31 DERAILMENT, MP 212" in 13px 700 and a 12.5px #5E574B detail line with the before and after figures. Leave headroom above the data for it.

Avoid: rounded corners, gradients, shadows, colored backgrounds for panels, thick lines, a floating legend box, and any series color besides the three.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the dotted prior-year lines stay clearly fainter than this year's lines, the notice box does not cover any data, the side table rows match the latest values, and the figure in the title matches the data.
