Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Carbon Budget" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a climate policy briefing in dark mode. Deep evergreen, a pale historical line that forks into scenarios, and a quiet green area showing what is left to spend.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #0F2A22 (deep evergreen), with a soft radial lift to #143429 at the upper center.
- History, the fork point and key annotations: #EDE8DA (bone).
- Scenario colors, worst to best: #D9533B (ember), #E7A94B (amber), #7CC19A (net-zero green). Use the same order for any other ranked series.
- Remaining budget area: #2F6B4D, as a vertical gradient from 75% to 35% opacity.
- Secondary text: #93AFA2. Gridlines: #1F4035. Baseline and marker lines: #4E6E62. Source: #6F8F82. Soft green for secondary labels in the budget area: #C9DCC0.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Fraunces 600 for the title only: 32px, -0.3px letter-spacing, bone.
- Karla for everything else: eyebrow 11.5px 700 uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing in the net-zero green; subtitle 15.5px 400 in #93AFA2; axis labels 13px; series end labels 14px 700 in the series color with a second line 13px in #93AFA2 giving the end value; annotations 12px (bold first line, regular second line); gap callout 16px 800 bone; source and footnote 12px (footnote italic).

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at 92, subtitle at 120.
- Plot from x 96 to 760, y 160 to 510, leaving a 180px right gutter for end labels set 14px right of the last point.
- Source bottom left and a short italic method footnote bottom right at y 574.

Axes and grid:
- 1px #1F4035 horizontal gridlines at round values, labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot. A 1px #4E6E62 baseline at zero. Decade labels under the axis, the final year in 700 bone.
- A 1px #4E6E62 dotted vertical "today" marker (2 on, 4 off) at the fork year, labeled at its top.

Marks:
- Line chart: history as a 2.6px smooth bone line with round joins, labeled directly. At the fork year a bone dot (r 5, 2px evergreen ring). Each scenario is a smooth line from the fork: dashed (2.6px, 5 on, 4 off) for the first five years, then solid 3px with round caps, ending in a dot (r 4.5) in its color with an evergreen ring.
- Budget: fill the area under the lowest (net-zero) path from the fork to the end with the budget gradient, and label it inside ("Remaining budget" plus the total, computed as the area under that path). Draw a thin 1px bone line at 70% opacity across the scenario years at the even-pace level (budget divided by years) and label it "1.5 degree budget" with the pace underneath, placed inside the area so no line crosses the text.
- Gap bracket: a vertical 1.3px bone bracket with 10px end ticks between the worst and best scenarios at one year near the end, with a short dotted leader up to a callout in the empty space above ("39 Mt gap" plus a 12px explanation).
- Bar chart: history as bone bars (4px top radius, 60% of the band), and for scenario years a group of three slimmer bars per period in ember, amber and net-zero green, with the budget shown as a #2F6B4D band behind them; the first scenario period drawn as outlined dashed bars instead of solid.

Avoid: neon, glows, pure black, a boxed legend (label line ends instead), red and green as the only difference between series (keep amber between them and use direct labels), and gridlines brighter than #1F4035.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the budget total and even-pace value are computed from the net-zero path, the gap number matches the two scenario values at that year, and no label crosses a line.
