Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Car Fleet Age" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a boxcar side brought indoors. A boxcar-red panel with ribs and rivets carries stenciled white lettering and reporting marks, and a near-black page holds stacked bars that age from pale gray to deep red.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #111111 (near-black).
- Title panel: #9B2C2C (boxcar red), with vertical ribs 6px wide every 74px in #86242A (a 1.5px #B04040 highlight at 60% on their left edge) and rows of 1.8px #86242A rivets every 18px, 7px in from the top and bottom edges.
- Age band ramp, new to old: #D4D4D4 (pale gray), #D9A7A1, #CF6D63, #B0362F, #7A1A1A (deep red).
- Panel text: #FFFFFF, subtitle #F6DCDC. Chart text: #EDEDED; secondary #9A9A9A; gridlines #262626.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Stardos Stencil 700 only for the title (36px uppercase, stating the finding). The stencil breaks only read at large sizes, so never set it below about 30px; everything smaller uses Barlow Condensed.
- Barlow Condensed 600 for the reporting mark (20px, 4px letter-spacing, e.g. "BMRR 40211"), the bar totals (19px white) and the data block ("FLEET" 14px with 3px letter-spacing, the count 26px, "BLT 1968 TO 2025" 13px 500 with 2px letter-spacing).
- Barlow Condensed for everything else: subtitle 500 16px; category labels 600 17px #EDEDED; legend labels 600 15px; segment values 600 14px; axis labels 500 14px #9A9A9A; small caps notes 600 12.5 to 13px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- The red panel spans x 32 to 928, y 28 to 160, square corners. Reporting mark, title and subtitle stack on its left; on its right a data block inside a 1.5px white outline (about 164 x 82px): "FLEET", the total count, "BLT 1968 TO 2025".
- A legend row under the panel: "CAR AGE, YEARS" in #9A9A9A, then a 22 x 16px swatch and label per band.
- Category labels right-aligned to x 186, bars from x 200. Footer: "Source: ..." left and an uppercase note right.

Axes and grid:
- Vertical 1px #262626 gridlines at round values behind the bars, labels 500 14px #9A9A9A under the last row. No axis lines.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal stacked bars 27px tall on a 40px row pitch, square corners, segments separated by a 1.5px #111111 stroke, sorted by total. Print segment values when a segment is at least 40px wide (dark #111111 text on the three light bands, white on the two dark bands). Print the total 10px past each bar in Barlow Condensed 600.
- Line chart: one 2.5px line per group using the age ramp colors (or the groups ranked by a single measure in deep red #7A1A1A), dots at each point with a 2px #111111 ring, totals at the right end in Barlow Condensed 600, same red panel.

Avoid: gradients, glow, rounded bars, bright non-red hues, cramming values into thin segments, and setting the stencil face at small sizes, where it reads as a plain serif.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the ramp reads new-to-old from light to dark, the percentage in the title matches the data, the fleet total equals the sum of all bars, and nothing in the red panel collides.
