Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Bracket Notes" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a dark analyst briefing. The data is quiet and cool; the argument is written in the margin in warm italic notes, with curly brackets gathering rows into groups and one outlined mark as the story's focus.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #111827 (ink navy) for the whole canvas.
- Data marks: #A5B4FC (pale periwinkle).
- Medians and the title: #FFFFFF (white).
- Annotations: #FCA5A5 (light coral) for brackets, notes, group names, the focus outline, the focus row label and the dotted connector.
- Row labels #D1D5DB; secondary text and value labels #8B93A3; gridlines #1F2937.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IBM Plex Sans for the title (600, 25px, white, stating the finding), subtitle (400, 14px, #8B93A3), key (12px), axis labels (12px), row labels (400, 13px, right-aligned; 600 and coral for the focus row), value labels (11px) and group names (600, 10.5px, uppercase, 1.6px letter-spacing, coral).
- IBM Plex Serif italic 400 for every note (14px, coral, 17px line height, three short lines).

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Title at y 54, subtitle at y 80, a small key at y 104 (a periwinkle pill "Band, minimum to maximum" and a white tick "Median").
- Row labels end 22px left of the plot, which runs from about x 236 to 612. Rows are 32px apart with 22px gaps between groups.
- Curly brackets at x 648, one per group, spanning its rows; each group's note sits 24px right of its bracket, vertically centered: the uppercase group name, then the italic note.
- Source line ("Source: illustrative data...") 12px, below a 1px #1F2937 rule under the plot.

Axes and grid:
- A top axis with $ labels centered above 1px #1F2937 vertical gridlines; no bottom axis, no axis lines, no horizontal gridlines.

Marks:
- Bar chart (range bars): horizontal 12px-tall periwinkle bars from minimum to maximum with fully rounded ends (6px radius), a 2.5 x 20 px white median tick across each, and the minimum and maximum values in 11px #8B93A3 just outside the ends.
- Line chart: 2px periwinkle lines with a periwinkle 16% band for the range where one exists, white 4px dots for the key series, and the same brackets grouping line end labels on the right.
- Focus: exactly one mark gets a 1.6px coral outline with a 4px gap (a pill around the bar), a coral row label and its own two-line italic note placed in empty plot space, joined to the outline by a 1.2px coral dotted connector (1.5 on, 3 off, round caps) ending in a 2.2px dot.

Brackets (the signature):
- Draw each as a curly brace from two cubic curves: 1.4px coral, round caps, 8px deep, with the point at the group's vertical center facing the note.

Avoid: filled coral marks, legends beyond the tiny key, notes inside the bars, more than one focus outline, gridlines through the notes, and notes that claim anything the data does not show.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each bracket spans exactly its group's rows, every claim in the notes is arithmetically true, the dotted connector touches the focus outline without crossing other bars, and no value label collides with a note.
