Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Book Bands" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a friendly, well-organized classroom reading chart. Pale sky background, soft muted classroom colors, rounded pills and bars, clear numbers. Cheerful without being loud.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #EEF6FB (pale sky).
- Band colors, in order: rose #E9A3B6, tomato #E5775F, butter yellow #F1CF62, cornflower #7F9DE0, leaf green #8CC274, apricot #F3AA70, turquoise #5DC3BF, plum #A283BF. When bars are ordinary categories, not bands, cycle through these in order.
- Ink #1F3547 for the title, counts, badges text and axis line. Secondary text #5D7385. Gridlines #D3E3EE. Badges #FFFFFF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Nunito throughout. Title 900 32px #1F3547, stating the finding. Subtitle 400 15px #5D7385 in one or two short friendly sentences that say the measure and explain how the categories work. Badge text 800 14px. Badge number 900 12px. Counts 900 20px. Tick labels 700 13px. Source and axis title 12px (axis title 700).

Layout:
- 56px left margin. Title baseline y 66, subtitle lines at y 96 and 116.
- Plot from x 70 to 860 starting at y 150; one row per category, 46px rows, 34px bars. Tick labels 22px below the last row. Source at the bottom-left (y 580), "Number of titles" at the bottom-right.

Axes and grid:
- Vertical 1px #D3E3EE gridlines at round values, tick numbers below. A 2px #1F3547 zero line with round caps on the left. No other axis lines.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal bars, 34px tall, square at the zero line and fully rounded at the value end (radius 17). Each bar sits on a soft duplicate offset 2px down in #1F3547 at 8% opacity. Inside the left end of each bar is a white pill badge (height 24, fully rounded, 6px in from the zero line) holding an r 8 dot in the bar's color with the band number in it, then the band name. The count sits 10px past the bar end in 900 20px ink, with a 6px #EEF6FB halo (paint-order stroke) so crossing guides never touch it.
- Line chart: 4px lines with round caps, one per series in the band colors in order, with r 7 dots that have a 3px white rim; each line ends in a white pill badge naming the series with a dot of its color, and the last value in 900 ink beside it. Faint horizontal #D3E3EE gridlines instead of vertical.
- Average or target guide: a 2px #1F3547 dotted line (dasharray 0.1 6, round caps) running the full height of the plot, drawn behind the bars, topped by a dark #1F3547 pill (height 22) with white 800 13px text such as "Average 29.8".

Avoid: saturated primaries, gradients, 3D, borders around bars, a separate legend (the badges are the labels), and rounding the zero end of the bars.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every badge fits inside its bar (make the scale wide enough for the shortest bar), counts do not collide with the guide line, the average is computed from the data, and the colors follow band order.
