Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Bone Count" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a zooarchaeology results figure shown on a dark screen. Earthy and quietly authoritative: natural bone, ochre, rust and sage stacked into wide sturdy columns on olive-black, with clean sans labels and no ornament.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #1B1D16 (dark olive-black).
- Series in stacking order from the baseline: #E8E1CF (bone white), #C89B45 (ochre), #A9553B (rust), #8FA37E (sage). A fifth series, if needed: #6E7F95 (slate).
- Primary text: #EEEADF. Secondary text and the baseline: #9A9B8C. Gridlines: #34372B.
- Labels inside segments: #1B1D16 on bone, ochre and sage; #F6EFE2 on rust. The secondary note inside the bone segment: #5C5A4E.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Franklin throughout. Title 29px 700 #EEEADF stating the finding; subtitle 15px 400 #9A9B8C with measure, unit and scope; legend 13.5px 500; segment values 12.5px 600; stack totals 17px 700 #EEEADF; category names 14px 600 with a 12px #9A9B8C sub-label beneath; y tick labels 12px; source 11.5px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Title, subtitle, then the legend as a single row at the top left (12px square swatches, 19px to the label, 26px between items), ordered like the stack from the bottom up.
- Plot from x 110 to 900 and y 176 to 520, headroom above the tallest stack for its total. Category name and sub-label centered under each column. Source line at the bottom left.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 0.8px #34372B gridlines at round values with right-aligned labels 12px left of the plot, a 1px #9A9B8C baseline at zero, no y-axis line and no tick marks.

Marks:
- Bar chart: wide square-cornered stacked columns (about 57% of the slot, 112px at four categories), each segment separated by a 1.5px seam of background color. The stack total sits 12px above each column. Segment values are centered in segments at least 20px tall and omitted otherwise; the baseline series also shows its share of the stack ("34% of phase") on a second line. Thin 1px dotted connectors (2 on, 3 off) in bone white at 60% opacity link the top of the baseline series from one column to the next.
- Line chart: 2.5px lines in the same four colors with straight segments and 5px dots with a 2px background ring, a light area under the bone white series only (12% opacity), and each series named directly at its right end in its own color, legend row kept at the top.

Avoid: gradients, rounded corners, shadows, outlines around segments, a boxed legend, and cramming labels into slivers.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the ochre and sage segments stay distinguishable (the legend and labels carry identity), totals match the sum of segments, the shares are computed per stack, and no segment label is squeezed into a thin segment.
