Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Board Meeting" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a quarterly board pack. Dark charcoal, thin gold rules and small-caps headers, plan versus actual with the variance shaded, and a tidy table that gives the directors the numbers.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Slide: #1B1C1F (charcoal). Gridlines and dividers: #34363B. Baseline: #55585F.
- Actual line, forecast line, kicker, confidentiality tag, title rule and table header: #C8A24A (gold).
- Plan line: #A7ABB2 (light gray), dashed.
- Variance shading between plan and actual: #3F8F5E (muted green) where ahead and #B8483E (muted red) where behind, both at 55% opacity. The behind shading also carries a diagonal hatch (1.4px #E27468 lines at 55% opacity, 6px spacing, 45 degrees) so it never depends on red versus green alone.
- Primary text: #ECEAE4. Secondary text: #8E9199. Positive variance figures: #6CC08C; negative: #E27468.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Lato only, weights 400 and 700.
- Small-caps headers are set as uppercase 700 at 9.5 to 11px with 1 to 2.2px letter-spacing: the kicker ("Q3 FY2026 | COMMERCIAL REVIEW", 11px gold), the confidentiality tag, "FORECAST", month labels, table headers and the folio.
- Action title: 700 28px #ECEAE4, a sentence that states the variance. Subtitle 400 13px #8E9199 with company, measure, unit, fiscal year and forecast period.
- Axis values 11.5px #8E9199. Direct labels 700 12px in the line color. Table cells 13px (400, or 700 for the total row and all variance figures).

Layout:
- 56px margins. Kicker at baseline 50px on the left; a "CONFIDENTIAL, BOARD USE ONLY" tag at the top right in a 0.8px gold outline box (196 x 20 px).
- Title baseline 94px, a 1px gold rule across the full width at 114px, subtitle at 140px.
- Plot from x 96 to 596 and y 200 to 488. A variance table from x 690 to 904, separated from the plot by a 1px #34363B vertical divider.
- A small legend for the two variance shadings under the month labels. Footer rule at 556px, source at the left and "BOARD PACK | 6" at the right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines at three round values, 1px #34363B, labeled "$4.0M" style right-aligned 12px left of the plot. A 1px #55585F baseline, no y-axis line.
- Fiscal month labels in small caps under the baseline; future months dimmed to #62656C.
- The forecast period sits on a very faint white panel (3% opacity) labeled "FORECAST" at its top left.

Marks:
- Line chart: plan as a 1.8px #A7ABB2 line dashed 6 on, 5 off over all months. Actual as a 2.8px solid gold line with straight segments, 2.6px hollow markers (charcoal fill, 1.6px gold ring) and a 5px solid gold dot at the latest actual, labeled with its value. After the last actual, a 2.2px dotted gold forecast (1.5 on, 5 off, round caps). Fill the gap between plan and actual per segment, split exactly where the lines cross, green where actual is above plan and hatched red where below. Label "Plan", "Forecast" and "Actual" directly.
- Bar chart: plan as a 2px-radius #A7ABB2 outline bar (1.2px stroke, no fill) with the actual as a narrower solid gold bar centered inside it; the variance as a small green or hatched red cap between the two tops; forecast periods as gold outline bars with a dotted stroke.

Labels and annotation:
- Variance table: gold small-caps header ("BOOKINGS VS PLAN, $M"), column heads PLAN, ACTUAL, VAR. right-aligned, a #55585F rule under the heads, 1px #34363B rules between period rows, a thin gold rule above the bold YTD row, and a two-line note under it with the YTD percentage and full-year forecast versus plan.

Avoid: bright saturated colors, heavy fills, gradients, rounded boxes, legends inside the plot, and gold used on anything but actuals, forecasts and the header accents.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the table sums match the monthly data, the YTD variance in the title matches the table, the shading splits exactly at each crossing, and the direct labels clear the table divider.
