Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Board Grades" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a sawmill tally board. Each bar is a planed board standing on end, with visible grain, end-grain rings and a paper tag nailed on top. Crafted and tactile, but tidy and quiet like a well-made catalogue.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #F2EEE6 (light ash).
- Board tones, one per category from palest to darkest in category order: #E2D2AE, #D0B380, #B99160, #9A6E43, #74502F, #4F3421. With fewer categories, spread across this ramp; with more, repeat the ramp.
- Board outline and fine details: #6E5840. Title and strong ink: #3E2C1E. Secondary text: #85735D. Gridlines: #DDD5C6.
- Tags: #FFFCF5 paper with a 0.9px #6E5840 edge; the largest value's tag is inverted (#3E2C1E fill, #FFFCF5 text).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Josefin Sans 700 for the title (36px, #3E2C1E, stating the finding); Josefin Sans 600 for the eyebrow (12px uppercase, 2.6px letter-spacing, #85735D) and the dimension-line label (13px uppercase, 2px letter-spacing).
- Josefin Slab for everything else: subtitle 18px 400 #85735D; category labels 16px 600 (700 for the largest); shares under them 14px 400 #85735D; tag values 16px 700; gridline labels 13px 600; footer 13px.

Layout:
- Eyebrow at y 58, title baseline about y 100, subtitle about y 130, left-aligned at x 56.
- Plot about x 96 to 904 with the baseline at y 468 and room above the tallest board for its tag. Category label 26px under the baseline, share of total 18px under that.
- A dimension line at about y 538 spanning from the first board's left edge to the last board's right edge: 1px #6E5840 line with 20px end ticks and small solid arrowheads, broken in the middle for "RUN TOTAL 10,370 BD FT".
- Footer: source on the left, a short reading note on the right.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis line. Three light gridlines (1px #DDD5C6) with comma-grouped labels on the left. A 1.4px #3E2C1E baseline.

Marks:
- Bar chart: boards about 55% of the band (74px at six categories), all corners rounded 7px, 1px #6E5840 outline, starting at zero. Inside each board, clipped to it: six long, gently wavy vertical grain strokes (0.7 to 1.3px, a darker brown at 22 to 28% opacity), and a 16px end-grain cap at the top tinted darker (16 to 30% opacity) with five concentric elliptical growth-ring arcs (0.8px, 45% opacity) centred just below the cap.
- Tags: a 64 x 26 tag with clipped top corners, rotated alternately +2 and -2 degrees, sitting 12px above the board and tied by a 0.8px string to a nail (r 3, #8C8A86 with a #5E5B56 rim) 8px inside the board top.
- Line chart: a 3px #9A6E43 line with round joins over the same grid, each point marked by a small rounded end-grain disc (r 7, fill #E2D2AE, 1px #6E5840 edge, two ring circles inside), with the tag style used for the latest and peak values only; an 8% #9A6E43 area fill under the line.

Avoid: 3D perspective, photographic wood textures, shadows, saturated colors, dense gridlines and a legend (label directly under each board).

When you're done, render the chart and check that grain and rings stay clipped inside each board, the tags never collide with each other or the title, bars start at zero, and the shares add up to 100%.
